Went to look at a 95 that had abs light on and 3 green lights on dash for rear wheels and right front. Transfer shift lever would not move. Any ideas this is my 1st experience with montero have 2 troopers and an amigo.
Thanks

I don't think the lights are related. The green lights representing wheels burn out regularly, but you wouldn't see the right front if the transfer case was still in 2wd.... If the truck hasn't been in 4wd in a while (or ever), it's probably sludged, and needs to be worked in and out a few dozen times. If you can, it would not hurt to change all your fluids!.

For the ABS not sure. sorry.

If the montero has been sitting for a while, the ABS light might come on...after driving it regularly the light will usually go off on its own.

My monty which is had been sitting most of the summer and fall, was like this (with the light on), after driving it in the last couple weeks, its gone off

As has been mentioned above the wheel lights in the dash go out. Rear wheel lights are always on. Fronts go on when the vehicle detects it's in 4wd. In 2wd they should be off. if it's on, then your vehicle thinks its in 2wd.

You mentioned the xcase lever is frozen. What position is it in? In 2wd it should be towards the rear of the rig almost touching the automatic transmission shifter housing. Shifting to 4H puts it a little forward and to the left/middle and 4L puts it even more forward and well over to the left.

ABS could be something as simple as the sensors being blocked up with dirt or it could be a more serious problem that prevents the ABS from working. Your brakes however should remain unaffected and still function fine... just no ABS.

Thanks for the replies. I gave up on that one and bought a 96sr today that runs well just needs some tires and maybe front end work has a wobble at low speed. No record of timing belt so thats first on my list.

Yeah, I think you did the right thing.

Also, thinking a bit more, Grasscat encountered a similar issue with his old 98 Montero. Turned out to be a phenolic spacer/guide in the xcase shifter broke and jammed his shift lever up in 4wd. He was lucky and was able to disassemble and remove the broken parts so he could shift it into 2wd to get it home.

For the timing belt, you can remove the front plastic covers enough to see the timing belt and determine just how bad it looks. However your safe bet is to just change them on principle along with the tensioner, pulleys, water pump, front cam seals, front crank seal, and other accessory belts.

Anyhow, looking forward to seeing pics of your 96.
