Read, he DOES NOT have a 231 or a 249, in 96 the 4.0 ZJ only came with a 242.

Limiteds come with the 249.

"4WD systems included Command-Trac, a part-time unit offering temporary 4-wheel assistance; Command-Trac was dropped from lineup in conjunction with the SE trim in 1996. Select-Trac had the option of either full-time or part-time operation; Both shift-on-the-fly Command-Trac and Select-Trac were already available for the Cherokee XJ lineup, and were adopted to the ZJ platform. Exclusive to the Grand Cherokee was the introduction of Quadra-Trac having all-time four-wheel assistance only, this was standard on all Limited and specialty trims and optional for Laredo models alike. Two-wheel-drive models were sold though only for "Laredo" trims in late 1993, it wasn't until 1994 when 2WD was available for Limited; and in 1997 5.2 L V8 engines were sold along with 2WD."

So, my 231 info is off, but he can have the 249 or 242.

For all this effort, I am not interested. I would rather get one, and start from scratch... That way, I get what I want... and, I can keep my truck....

Always liked the ZJ, even when I worked for Jeep.

My truck is sticking around for now... I would prefer something with a manual as well.... I have no love or trust for automatics.... I am in the process of teaching my wife to drive stick(she is fine, just needs more practice and confidence)....

Thanks for the input, and help.

I think that's the right decision Jay.

The ZJ's are nice, but as you say, you would be throwing more money at it to get what you want.

The Iron Rock long arms are sweet, they ride nice. But you can only come down to a 4.5" lift. That and some 33's and you would have a sweet wheeling rig.

But for a "Go anywhere, at anytime" and tow your boat rig, I think you are better off to build from stock.

About time someone did their research and grew a pair! I already knew you can buy a 4.0 Limited with a 249, I just like getting people excited and thinking on occasion. You can also find a 96-98 V8 Laredo with a 242, both are uncommon but can be found if you look hard enough.

Please show me a 96-98 Laredo with a 5.2 and 242 transfer case, please do....

Um, I have one...... a ZJ Limited.....

......but technically it's not a ZJ, it's compliance plated as ZG - that's an Export Model, built by Daimler-Benz's Steyr Division (NOT Steyr Magna , Canada) which builds military vehicles, M-B Gelanden Wagons, guns, rifles, big artillery and munitions in Graz, Austria. It's an Australia delivery, so RHD, has a 4.0L I6, 249 QuadraTrac, TracLoc (LSD) and it seems 90% of Oz delivered ones were Limiteds with extra options loaded in, many U.S and Canadians who've seen them have commented that they're loaded and better built, lots of German and European made parts.
