I need to do the horn thing too. I pummeled the steering wheel into submission the other day after being cutoff by an incomprehensibly stupid driver in front of me. My horn stopped working about 6 months ago, but habits die hard.

Bought my truck in March with a hole in the steering wheel near the spoke on the right side, and a craptacular toggle in the same spot at your horn button. There were cut wires in the steering wheel hole, and the toggle ran to the horn fuse. Disabled both but want to fix the horn. SRS light is already on, so...

I'm also looking to do my sleeping platform in the next month. Was nice to get the updates on this thread via email today.

If you ever have the opportunity, I highly recommend it. Luckily we had no flats over the 11,000 mile long trip.
Btw, welcome to the Montero fold!

Great thread, thanks for putting the time into documenting your build and adventures. It definitely has me primed to find my monty and get to it.

when you installed your roof rack, did you take the silver trim down? it looks like my gutter mounts are going to squish the trim pretty well.

Awesome thread kept me up well into night. In my youth I traipsed all over the Yukon and NWT's in Dodge Power Wagons and tracked Nodwells working geophysical crews. After reading your tales I was jealous of your visits to the wrecking yards for Monty parts. Up here in BC Monty's are rare although there are a few Pajeros like mine, a 94 SWB 2.8 Turbo Diesel. Parts are a little harder to come by.Happy trails and thanks for the tales.

DANG! I may get fired because I just read this thread from tip to tail. Amazing documentation of builds and travel. It's nice to see you are out enjoying the hard work that you put in.
You are inspirational for sure. Although, that headliner teardown looked like a beast.
Anything new?

Hi Neighbor

Looking to pick up my 98 Montero next week from someone that just dropped a new engine in it so pretty excited as I was not looking forward to eventual engine swap. I plan on using it for daily driving and occasional camping trips. I would like to stay in touch with you regarding lift kit purchase and installation.

In the meantime, congratulations on your purchase and good luck with the build. By the way if anyone knows where I can get a 3 inch lift please share.

By the way my last build was an 80 Toyota FJ40. Almost caused a divorce. Lol

It's been quite some time since I've updated this thread. I've now owned the Montero for 5 years and 70k miles and it continues to keep on ticking. Over the past weekend I pulled the front axles and had them rebuilt, redid the ball joints, tie rods, brakes and shocks. I also installed a set of BFG KO2s in 235/85 on 16" Toyota steelies. I had a machine shop bore out the centers 2mm.

Great thread! I'm glad you made an update. I think this is one of the few Gen 2.5 threads in here I hadn't read already! I'm going to follow your lead on that white roof-line.
