97SR Won't Come Out of Park

It was 16 degrees this morning, I had the Montero all warmed up but I could not get it out of Park. I hit the brakes over and over. The brake lights were working. I re-started it several times and finally gave up.

How do I get it out of Park? How do I disable this permanently?

Thanks,
Brian

There is a lock in the shifter mechanism which releases in Park only when the brake pedal is depressed. There is a cable that runs between the brake pedal and the shifter which controls the actuation of the lock. In order to access the locking mechanism on the shifter end of the cable, you'd have to take off the center console trim. If I recall, the locking mechanism is on the driver side of the shifter. I'm not sure where the cable attaches at the brake pedal but if you look under the dash I'm sure you'll find it. Good luck...

jlocster,

That's great information. thank you.

I'll get the cable removed or adjusted in the morning.

Thank you again.
