1998 Hummer XLC2 - offroad camper

This would be like living out of a hotel compared to the kind of camping trips I'm used to.

wow! that's really close to me, amazed I haven't seen it around. It would be great if it was some kind of colapsable roof so it could maintain a decent center of gravity. Those things have a 4000 lb payload so it would easily haul that camper around. Looks interesting. I'm always amazed how all offroad vehicles for sale claim to have never been offroaded!

I think rolling in a H1 with the 6.5TD or the Alpha with the Duramax would be the epitome of "guilty pleasure."

Ironically enough I saw a pic online recently of a H1 with my favorite camping solution - :chowtime: :safari-rig:

According to the guys on the HML, that is a (former) Border Patrol truck...so I'm sure its been offroad, albiet, probably not with the current owner. There were originally about 10 trucks that looked IDENTICAL to this one.

There were a few others (think paddy wagon) that had a much lower box on the back. :costumed-smiley-007 :sombrero:

Kcowyo - I like that setup alot too, just something about an XLC2 makes me h.......uhhh....um, nevermind.

yes -- the 2 doors are definately a rare beast. I'd prefer one over my open top, but occaisionally the wife and kid come alone so I needed the room of the 4 door.

I've got my eye on a 98 XLC2 right now. I'm working on justifying the price right now. I'm ahead of the 8 ball, though, because my wife wants me to get it.:wings:
I probably won't put a camper in the back of it. I'll most likely build a rack with a rooftop tent. If I do that I'll keep it low enough so the truck's roof is still the highest point on the truck.

SIDEBAR Question

Is that body from an M1037 or M1042? Looks similar to me, but I haven't dealt with the AMG vehicles in a few years....personally I would prefer the older M997/M997A1 body as it has standup height and a "cabover" for the HVAC system.

if you are looking at buying a hummer, be sure to read up on the #8 cylinder crack issue. It affected '96 through '00 turbo diesels. My '97.5 had this problem when I bought it and the local dealer really bent me over (3 yrs and still limping!). If I was buying another truck just to wheel, It would be an earlier year without the turbo ('94, '95, '96). Not as nice on the road, but certainly less to go wrong (I'd probably miss the ac though).

I'm sure you've been researching, but incase you haven't found these sites...here are a few great resourses:

Chuck Copelson'r tech pages (worth gold!):
http://www.flashoffroad.com/humdefault.htm

some articles to read on that page:
http://www.flashoffroad.com/features/buyingTrucks/buyingUsed.html
http://www.flashoffroad.com/Diesel/No8Cyl/CrackedBlock.htm
http://www.flashoffroad.com/Diesel/RearheadCooling/rearHeadCooling.htm

here's another buying guide:
http://www.lynchhummer.com/Changes/h1.changes/h1changes.index.html

You may know all this already, just want to make sure you are informed. These are great trucks, easy to drive, easy to work on and lot's of fun to wheel.

Bob,
No, as far as I know, that box is/was made specifically for the Border Patrol trucks. Its not the same dimensions as the shelter carrier box on HMMWV's. I like the 4 litter ambulance bodies better, too. Most of them have A/C (very uncommon for older HMMWV's) and aux A/C & diesel generators in the ambulance body.

Ron - Yeah, I've been researching for a LONG time. I'm a member over on the HML (humvee.net) and I've read and re-read Chuck's site so many times that I might be able to recite it.

EDIT - I just noticed that it looks like my drooling smiley is dripping saliva on my sarcastic smiley's head.

just wanted to make sure you knew about those sites...glad to hear you do. Good luck on the hunt -- hope to see pictures of a dirty truck and big smiles asap.
