99 jeep cherokee

Does anybody know if the rear differential on a 99 cherokee is a rubber plug. I have a leak and there is a rubber plug on it. Just don't know if thats the actual plug or a cover for the bolt?

is it a dana 35? they have plugs in some of them, is it a serious dripping leak or just a moist leak?

Change the rear cover to an aftermarket one, they all have a screw in plug and offer additional protection for that ring gear etc. The stock cover is like tinfoil in comparison and that rubber bung is a bit of a joke.

And a lot of the after market diff covers put the plug higher up so that you can fill it with a little bit extra oil.

The rubber plug can seep sometimes. Best advice yet is to get an aftermarket diff cover. Ruffstuff Specialties makes my favorite. You will never hurt it, and you can get them with recessed bolts, and drain plugs. Best 130 sum dollar investment for your Jeep. BTW your Jeep has a 29 spline Chrysler 8.25 rear axle as long as its all stock.

Pull the plug clean the area on the metal and rubber put some RTV silicone on the face part of the plug and be done.

The plug "hardens" with time and heat and does not seal as good. Replacement ones are around $5 or so from the dealer (or at least used to be).
