A couple FSJ questions.

So I have been looking for a new suv, and came across a 1975 Cherokee, 360, auto, 33" tires for $2500. It looks nice, and I will have to pay a premium for it being pre-smog. I currently have a 1990 Suburban, that is rusted to hell, and won't pass smog. How hard is it to swap the axles under the jeep? Also, how much of a pain is it to use my 700r4 behind the 360? Can I adapt my stock tbi unit from my 350 to use on the 360? I'd love to find another burb, but finding a pre-smog one is damn near impossible in So Cal, and it would be expensive as hell if I did find one.

Hmm, have you hit a time where you need some sort of unobtainium factory part to get it to pass a visual, or is the engine just that tired?

Being leafs @ both ends FJs are pretty easy to do axle swaps. You'll find about half of them have 44s under them anyway, for 33s it wouldn't be to bad to keep them.

Pre-smog.. I'd probably just try to find a good chevy drivetrain to throw in there. Motor mounts should be pretty readily available for most chevy applications in an FJ.

Or.. you could be difficult like me. 2005 hemi + dodge D44 + 5 link 2nd gen dodge front end + 14 bolt in an old M-truck :)

If its a half ton suburban, the Dana 44s in the jeep would probably be stronger than the 10 bolts in the suburban.

The reason I want to swap axles is that I currently have 4:88's and a detroit in the rear (14 bolt FF and 30-spline 10 bolt front. My engine is tired, but I would just run the 360 until I can rebuild the 350. If I put the jeep springs on top of the axles like the GM, will their be any major problems? I'm guessing drive lines would need to be extended, along with brake hoses. Anything else?

I was just getting ready to tell my nephew about that jeep. You better hurry and pic it up before he snatches it:)

Just talked to the seller. No AC (understandable), but no heater either???? Does anyone make an AC/Heater unit for it that isn't astronomical in price.
