A Day Cruising in the Hualapai Mountains

We had great weather and thought that a ride in the trees would fit the day nicely. It really is great to have a sky island just out your back door, so to speak. Kingman is at 3400 feet elevation and the Hualapai mountains are at 7000.

All these shots are with my cell phone so none are very well done. One of these days I will remember to bring a camera.
Here are a couple of shots looking out from the trail up to the top of the peaks. This first one is a shot of a stack.

This next one is just past the stack. We are looking out to Hualapai Valley, where Kingman lies.

Just to show that we actually did take the bikes out.

Kind of a favorite spot on Flag Mine rd that we like to stop at. From this point, you can look out east to the Big Sandy.

Signs of lots of rain. We ran across quite a few rock slides on the way down the backside of the mountain.

The lake was as full as I have ever seen it as well.

Many have made the trip from Phoenix to Las Vegas on Highway 93, but here is a stretch of 93 that I doubt you have been on. Before I 40 was built, 93 ran from Kingman to it's present location and this is part of the abandonment. Heck, even most folks in Kingman don't know about it.

All in all, it was a good ride. Mo is now riding a Yamaha XT 250 instead of her DR 650 and she is much happier on it. So not so many dirt naps for her. My KLR, as usual, did great. I only wish I was a better rider.

Cool. I thought Kingman was higher. Got caught in a snowstorm there one fall, passing through. Nearly 30 years ago.

Ride more, you'll develop the skills! The KLR is a good ol' beast.

Great report. I've headed into the trails from around Wikiup but not up further north. As you write, I've made the trip on 93 many times. And I always see the trails and hills beckoning for exploration. Thanks for posting this to give a view of what's there.

Kind of blessed in this area for back country travel

We have six different mountain ranges in the are but my favorite by far, is the Hualapai's. It offers everything from casual trails to some very technical routes. Not to mention, when living in the desert, the chance to get out in the pine trees is a real treat. The county closes the road to the top when it snows but there are so many other ways to get up there that it isn't an issue. Not much in the area for city life but lots of fun for back country lovers.
