A daytrip to Sego Canyon, Utah and the Sego, Utah Ghost Town.

My wife and I visited the silent, serene vistas of Sego Canyon, Utah recently in eastern Utah just a few miles north of I-70 and tiny Thompson Springs, Utah. This canyon is home to amazing ancient petrographs and petroglyphs plus the rapidly deteriorating remnants of a busy coal mining ghost town/railway of the early 20th century. Here's some Sego historical data on Wikipedia: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...=DQxcIV4lMgfsRX50ZPK8Sg&bvm=bv.50310824,d.aWc

Here are three old black and white photographs of the Sego area in it's heyday. Two views of railway Sego Canyon coal operations and one of the town itself circa 1920's. In the town photo the white structure on the left is the Boarding House which has now completely collapsed and in the center is the large stone-built Company store whose roofless walls still stand. Of the two right hand structures only the stone walls of the rear building still stand in silence as the desert reclaims the area. The color photos show the town site buildings as they now appear including the collapsed old Boarding House.

More photos of the deteriorating ghostly Sego Canyon coal mining area and stone structures from 8-3-2013. The desert and the junipers are reclaiming the land. If the stones and hills could only talk.

There is one deep railway hill cut through which the road up to the remnants of old Sego now runs. A few yards to the north of this deep cut lies the silent Sego Cemetery. Lots of graves and old deteriorating white-washed tombstones but few say much about the those who lie there. Our time in the old cemetery and looking down at the old railway cut was accompanied by a sunbathing male Collared Lizard who spent the entire time sitting on a tombstone and looking with disdain at our bothersome wanderings. In his mind we did not exist any more than his "rock" was a human tombstone. We left him to his solitude and contemplations.

Best not forget about the ancient Indian art plus here is an arch directly across from the BLM parking lot for the art. Also a buck pronghorn near the Sego Canyon mouth. He treated us with the same disdain the collared lizard did in the cemetery................in other words we did not exist and he was not going to move an inch.

Looks like a cool place and not horribly far for us Az folks...thanks for giving us more reasons to get out of the house and see some history.

An interesting place! Last time we were there we were short on time (trying to get back to SLC from Moab) and didn't get a chance to explore the area.

Thanks for the report - great pics and an interesting look at history.
