A daytrip to the Bangs Canyon Recreation area in Colorado

A Jeep and a Land Rover plus their two old codger owners spent Sunday Oct. 21, 2013 enjoying a 20 mile scenic 4x4 loop daytrip in the beautiful Bangs Canyon Recreation Area near Grand Junction, Colorado. This beautiful area of pinyon/juniper canyons and mesas, desert grasslands and adobe hills, seasonal desert brooks and waterfalls plus the floodplain of the Gunnison River lies just a few miles southwest of an urban area of 100,000 people. To the north this large Bangs Canyon Rec Area is bounded by the exquisite Colorado National Monument. There are numerous opportunities for four wheeling, mountain biking, hiking, birding, wildflower viewing, etc etc etc. Just to the east one views the nearby huge and high Grand Mesa from all over this Rec area. Bangs Canyon Rec Area and bordering Colorado National Monument are part of the northern end of the Uncompahgre Plateau which runs for many many miles SE to the high San Juan Mountains. The fall weather of western Colorado is usually fair and mild with great opportunities to get outside before winter arrives and even then the snowclad high desert is a delight to see snowbound. Our day was fair, mild, and windless and so we took advantage of the dry 4x4 trail to explore all day. This is NOT a 4x4 trail loop you want to be on if conditions are wet or rainy as adobe abounds. Here are some photos of our day. Saw very few people except for a mile and a half in from the start at an optional ledge and rocky area called "The Playground" which has been set aside for 4x4 "playing". At this area there were a dozen 4x4 viewing and "playing". Once past after "playing" ourselves for a few minutes we saw few people the rest of the day.

More Bangs Canyon Rex Area photos. Surprising amount wildflowers still blooming plus nice fall colors from the cottonwoods and especially skunkbush sumac (Rhus trilobata). I included a picture of the flowering nasty weed Halogeton which is an exotic invader in desert areas but has rather pretty low growing whitish greenish flower covered stems. Also a milkweed pod and fuzzy seeds are shown.

More Bangs Canyon Rec Area 4x4 loop photos. The loop was about 20 miles long. As the area had abundant late summer/fall rains the desert grasslands really grew and greened up helping the wildflowers as well as the grasses. Also pictured is the entrance to the optional hard core 4x4 trail called Billings Canyon which is a popular short nasty run for well built 4x4's who often break stuff doing it. Not for us!! We just wanted great scenery and moderate 4x4 stuff!!

I moved / retired to GJ in Feb. after 22 years in Moab. and have yet to wheel in that area. Love that kind of country!

Thanks. I love that kind of country as well. That area is great in the spring and early summer when the wildflowers are out in full force and Rough Canyon Creek and Falls is flowing. Also made it out to Rattlesnake Canyon via the lower 4x4 trail the day before which is NW of Colorado National Monument. Lots of great arches in Rattlesnake Canyon. Here's a couple of pictures.

I spent a Sunday earlier this spring with our local Toyota club (Book Cliff Cruisers) at the Bangs area. We were doing a 4x4 training class with Bill Burke that weekend, we did spend some time at the playground improving our skills going up and down ledges. Bangs Canyon is definately worth checking out and hope to get back out there again soon.

Bill Burke had a group out there that we ran into at The Playground and then passed by just above the Rough Canyon Falls area.
