A few Basic Questions for a New Trailer Build

I am thinking about building an off road trailer. We have a Jeep Rubicon, so we want to keep it lite and as small as possible. Can any one tell me what is a good axle length to start with. I am very green this, but I need to start somewhere. Trailers are just welded parts right? So, a basic welded frame with an axel, leaf springs and shocks. I see that there are a lot of Humvee Trailers out there but the are 7' wide and heavy. How wide is the Axel on some of these high end trailers like the Patriot X2? I am just trying to get this started.

Thanks!

You can build a very sturdy but light-weight trailer using a modified Harbor Freight frame and a diamond plate aluminum box. The classic WWII military trailer had a tub measurement of 41" wide by 72" long (by about 18" tall).

Ideally you want the track width no greater than your Jeep's width tire to tire.

A lot of people try to use the same wheels as the tow vehicle so you can use the same spare tire on either vehicle. When you're buying the axle, you may want to try to get some hubs that are compatible with the wheels on your Rubicon.

Thanks for answers and info. I hear a lot of talk about the old Military M-416 tralers also. Has anyone changed the hitch?
