A little help..

Having been a sailor for many years, I learned the value of asking for help and advice. As a computer user I find that to be a valuable tool as well. I've just joined and really don't know where to find the answers I'm looking for.
I have a '98 Toyota Tacoma SR 5 extra cab 4WD with the 2.7 engine, and I'm looking for any feed back on slide in pop-top campers. I need to sleep three at the absolute most, more often just two and 80% of the time just me and the dog.
Any feedback is better than none.

Welcome!

I'm on the other side of the divide from you.

Is there anything specific you'd like to know? There are plenty of new and used pop-up truck camper options for the compact trucks with the 6-foot bed. Colorado has some of the best availability for these campers.

The 2.7 should move the combo along well enough (I have the 2.4L 8-valve). Some rear suspension assist is usually a good idea when carrying a camper. There are lots of ways to add support to the rear suspension. I use the simple and inexpensive half-leaf helper springs (auto parts stores carry them) and am pretty happy with them.

Three people in a compact truck pop up camper is a little snug but it can be done, especially if they're people who enjoy spending time together. Pay special attention to the dimensions of the cab-over bed to make sure it's comfortable for two people. The cab-over in my camper is pretty snug for two people but the dimensions of the beds vary from camper to camper.

There are several camper lengths you can put in the 6-foot bed. I like the campers with the 8-foot floor length myself (reaches to the end of the open tailgate). It gives you more stretch-out room on the lower bed (if the lower bed is longitudinal) and usually includes an extra storage closet that most 6-foot campers don't have room for.

There are many manufacturers and styles of campers to fit these trucks. The Four Wheel Campers and ATC campers are the lightest-weight (aluminum framed) and best suited for off-highway exploring. Other campers are larger, more spacious, usually have more features and are heavier.

Camper manufacturers for compact trucks include:
Four Wheel Campers (FWC)
All Terrain Campers (ATC)
Hallmark
Phoenix/Coyote
Palomino
Northstar
XP camper
Alaskan (hard-sided pop-up)
Lite Craft (no longer made)
Scamper (no longer made)
Starcraft (no longer made)
Four Seasons (no longer made)
Sun-Lite (no longer made)
and others...

The Craigslist RV section is a great place to find used campers. I use the search terms "pop-up slide", "pop-up truck" or similar. There are usually more campers for full-size trucks than compact trucks but the compact ones are out there.

I have a 1988 Four Seasons (built in Colorado but the company is no longer around) camper (plywood construction with fiberglass exterior wall skin, aluminum foam-core roof) that I picked up on Craigslist for a few hundred $. It has the 8-foot floor length and wider construction than the FWCs and ATCs so it's pretty spacious for a compact truck camper. I really enjoy it--it's really redefined camping and overnight stays for me. It's pretty comfortable for two people and two dogs.

There's a section here on ExPo for pop-up truck campers...feel free to browse around over there:
