Yesterday, my friend and I traveled 3 hours to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to retrieve my new, but really old M416. The trailer is worse for wear missing both the front and rear panels of the box. The integrity of the trailer is great otherwise with no visible holes, tears or otherwise. We hooked it up to the back of my 04 Grand Cherokee and away we went. We were so surprised how well it tracked and pulled smoothly down the highway. That opinion changed 20 miles down the road when the driver's side outer bearing went kaboom, locked up the wheel momentarily and got our attention. We stopped as soon as it was safe to see the carnage. The cap was gone and the race of the bearing was gone as well as the cylindrical bearings inside. We had no choice other than to keep going. We made it to Ashland, WI to search 5 different businesses to no avail for replacement parts. We then attempted to find a U-haul trailer to load it into and pull home. That plan failed as there were none available. We then decided we needed to get moving regardless. We pulled the trailer slowly as we pulled up the schematics for the axle wondering why the wheel didn't fly off. Still unsure exactly what held it together until we dig into it. Not that it is new to turn an old military trailer into an expedition style trailer, but this was a perfect foundation to start one.
