My son, Sam, and I finally got some time available so we thought we would do a quick trip over the Hualapai mountains. We are both just getting used to riding dual sport bikes so the route was pretty tame but still slippery enough to make it a bit of a challenge.
We strove to stay on dirt as much as possible so we took one of Kingman's main roads that peters out to dirt quite quckly. From there it was under I 40 via a box culvert and then on to old highway 93. Before I 40 went through, 93 was a main road from Kingman to Wickieup and south to Phoenix. As is usually the case, once abandoned, it fell apart pretty quickly.
needless to say, this is not a stretch of 93 that many folks get to see.
Old age, rough roads and too much coffee make for a lot of stops.
From old 93 we headed south on Blake Ranch road. Blake Ranch will eventually dump out onto the current 93 but we had other plans. We would be turning north again and heading up Antelope road.
Finally at the top of the mountain. From here it's another three miles to Hualapai Lodge and pavement and then 12 miles back to Kingman.
Not too bad a view from on top
So a short trip, but now I am hopefully a bit better rider for the experience. Where to now?
