A simple weekend on the shores of Lake Michigan

I wasn't sure where to put this.

I looked. I really did.
..but this was neither an adventure
nor an expedition,
nor what many would even call fun.

It was not a remote location. I simply didn't have the time.
In fact, it was a state park here in Illinois.

But given the events that have transpired in my life recently, I simply needed solitude. I needed to get away from the administration on a forum. I needed to get away from the computer. I needed to get away from the nagging phone...
...and just "be"

So I headed to the shores of Lake Michigan.

Lake Michigan is one of the 5 great lakes. These are really fresh water inland seas. With 22,400 square miles of surface area, Lake Michigan is no mere pond. Tempests arise on the Great Lakes that equate to those in the oceans. The lake bottoms are filled with boats owned by people who thought their boats were big enough.
But for my weekend of simple reflection, Lake Michigan was simply a view.

A beautiful and serene view to purify my mind.

My only companions for the weekend were a group of bald faced hornets (aka Dolichovespula maculata ). These are the bad dudes who sting and bite at the same time, but having worked with them in the past, I was neither put out nor frightened nor intimidated. I was entertained.

Do you see how they have stripped the wood in the photo below? They chew the wood and it mixes with starch in their saliva, which they use to make their paper nests. These are the basketball sized gray orbs you see hanging in trees. I tried to allow them their work, and they gave me the same respect.

I focused on only one task at a time. If it were meal time, I took the time to enjoy the smells, the kitchen utensils, and took pleasure in doing what so many of us take for granted ; Eating good food.

My adventure for the weekend could be summed up with one word.
Baconeggandcheesebreakfastburrito.

During the days, I read Soul Mountain by Gao Xingjian. He was a man diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Six weeks later, the x-rays showed no cancer. So while he was anticipating death, he was granted a reprieve.
He disappeared into the mountains and wrote this book. He is the first Chinese author to win the Nobel Prize for literature.

I also spent some time shining up my rig. This is the type of mindless activity that lends to instant good results, and in just an hours time one can bask in the feeling of a job well done. There is no deadline. There is no interruption. There is only the truck, the beautiful weather, and the entire day if needed.

Dinner was simple yet spicy

And evening was spent in reflection. It is amazing how off course we get in life while we simply go through the motions of living. The routine we find ourselves in can whittle away at our soul, and one day we look in the mirror not knowing who is there anymore. I needed this weekend alone.
It is also a HUGE reason why we all need to get away. I know that you all know it, but we become better people by spending quiet time around a fire; cooking a meal in the open air; watching a sun rise over a lake; sleeping with a cleansing breeze flowing over our skin; and getting back to who we want to be as citizens on this blue marble.

I assume this is Illinois Beach State Park near Zion (almost Wisconsin)? I don't recall camping there, but have biked, and paddled a kayak there. When living in Chicago we either headed west to the Mississippi (Palisades), or north to Wisconsin for camping. If time allowed Door County was our favorite.

It is.
I have been to the Pallisades, and have spent a lifetime in door county fishing for bronzebacks in Sturgeon Bay.

In a couple of weeks, I am going to disappear in the Nicolet National Forest (about 6 hours north) but for this weekend, it was almost as if I needed time away that was not far away. Now I understand why people have local sanctuaries to rejuvenate themselves :)

Funny, the first place I went on an overnight camping trip with my scout troop, about 27 years ago, was Zion. Any way, I was up in the Chequamegon National Forest on the weekend of the 13th. for the Fat tire fest and the 42 mile MTB race. On Friday, we were traveling on the fire roads pre riding sections of the course for Saturday's race and the only thing on my mind was that I wanted to come back again with out the pressure of the race to drive the trails, ride my bike and just hang out.

Have fun,

B.

i really enjoyed reading this post. i myself was hoping to get away this weekend....but i found with all of lifes activities it wasn't going to be possible! i did however manage to find a few hours to take out my truck and tool around some familiar trails and do a short hike, it definately helps melt away the stress. i only can hope to spend a weekend away before the great weather fades away. keep up the greta posts! later, Brad.:safari-rig:

I know how you feel. I have a sanctuary in the Sam Houston National forest. It is isolated and right on a lake. I can sit and watch the people fishing off boats during the day, take a swim or just walk in the woods. The best part is that it is 30 minutes away and easily reached for a weekend trip or week long trip.

Having a weekend to be an observer of our world can bring the needed clarity to one's life. An adventure need not be far and exotic, it may be in your own backyard. Thanks for sharing the TR and showing that open spaces have an intrinsic value even if it is a small local park or a world heritage site.

Thanks for all of the comments.
The time to reflect was priceless for me. I'm halfway through a Monday and have a different outlook on things. It is not a new outlook. I just needed to rediscover the one that I had from some time ago that got lost while wading through life.
Thanks again for reading and for the kind words.

Great pics Bill, and I see you are enjoying the Snow Peak gear.

Thanks Corey. Yes, the Snow Peak stuff is tight. My only beef was how quickly the little Ti fry pan scorched, but then again, it is simply hard to beat stainless in the kitchen as a cooking surface :)
