A Strange Problem Today with the Tacoma...

Today, as I attempted to leave the hardware store... the truck would not go into reverse... automatic tranny 05 Tacoma.

So, me being me, I popped off the little cover and manually bypassed the lockout and drove home.

While driving, I notice the check engine light is on as well as the airbag light... and the dash indicator for which gear you are in is not lit... and I have no reverse lights or turn signals...

So, I check ALL fuses... all look fine.

WTH?

I will look at this again in the light of day and maybe it will make more sense but in the meantime, has anyone else had this happen and if so, what was the deal?

Maybe resetting the computer by pulling the battery cables for a minute might do the trick. That's a weird one.

I noticed that when in park the steering wheel is not locking... so maybe since that is happening (and no turn signals) there may be a problem in the steering column... that lockout is linked to the reverse lockout.

Normally, you cannot shift into reverse unless the engine is running and the wheel has been "unlocked" by moving it slightly.

And, the reverse curcuit does not come on unless you are "unlocked", powering the reverse lights.

I wonder if the issue is in the steering column since the there is an airbag light, turn signals inoperative, and the lockout is not working?

what CEL codes are you pulling up? It sounds like a simple fuse issue to me. I had the same thing happen when I lost my tail light fuse. I think it is a 10a mini fuse.

I had something similar happen in my 4runner, it ended up being a short in my tow harness, which would blow my turn signals and reverse fuses and then lock up my shifter.

You have lost a power circuit somewhere. The Cluster lights and Shifter interlock are all on it. The CEL light is probably erroneous. The light works by applying power to it. I bet the light is of when key on but truck not started then comes on when started (oposite of the way it would normaly work). That shows it has lost a power to the cluster.

Since the steering is not locking I would be looking at something coming apart up in the colum and partially unpluging the electrical part of the switch if you can't find a blown fuse as slosurfer has experianced.

You know what your problem is....you don't have a clutch! :gunt:

No seriously, that is weird. Hope you get it figured out soon.

Yeah, my truck shifts into reverse just fine. ;)

I hate all this electrical crap on modern vehicles  . So glad I have manual windows, door locks, transmission, t-case, etc.

Problem Solved!

The IG1 Fuse was blown (10 amp fuse located inside fuse box under dash).

Replaced fuse, problem solved!

Shift Lock is on page 238 of the electrical service manual.

Looks like the following fuses could also play in.

10A IG1
7.5A ACC
10A Stop
10A IG1 No. 2

Glad you were able to solve it, and with a cheap 20 cent part at that!

I think most modern vehicles have gone to a simplified wiring system in which several systems share the same wires.

I had a similar issue with my Montero about 2 months ago. I had parked the truck for about a week and hadn't driven it. The next time it started up I had lights on all over the place: transmission temp light, brake system light, turn signals didn't work, hazards didn't work, etc.

I found a 20A fuse under the hood that was the culprit. After I replaced it everything was back to normal. What kept bothering me was that none of the systems were related to each other...so that kept me digging.

Again, glad you were able to figure it out and without having to tow it to the dealer to have your transmission rebuilt or something similar!

Thanks.

The issue now is that the Check Engine Light is still on...

Dealer says I have to bring it in to reset but there has to be a trick to resetting it... I'm trying to avoid a needless trip to the dealer at all costs so it's time for some research!

Tried this to no avail, CEL still on:

How to reset the Maintenance Required Light
1. Start truck
2. Make sure Odometer is set to ODO xxxxx
3. Turn key to full off position
4. Push odometer button and hold
5. turn key back to on position
6. Continue holding the odometer button
7. Dashes will apear where the mileage should be located, the dashes will then disapear one by one. Hold button tell they are all gone!
1 sec(- - - - -) 1.5sec(- - - -).. (- - -).. (- -).. (-)
When the dashes are gone the odometer will blink your current miles once, and the maintenance required light will turn off.

Did you find that it was the IG1 fuse by just pulling the fuses until you came to the blown one, or did you find it another way?

Thanks.

When you pull off the little bin that covers the fuse box on 05+ Tacomas there is a diagram on the back of that bin. The IG1 fuse and all other curcuits used are marked there. Under the hood there is a second fuse box and it has a similar diagram for there as well as 2 spare fuses and the puller tool.

How did you know it was the IG1 fuse?

I didnt know it was that one until I saw it was blown during my process of elimination as I was pulling them all one by one to check.

I then referenced the diagram for its designation.
