My trip to Big Bend Ranch went well, but I ran into a few problems. I didn't plan on taking the Tacoma so I spent the last 3 weeks on the 4runner and then things went bad the night before and I decided to take out the Tacoma and pop its cherry.
I have a pair of 3" All Pro Springs on it now and with a campershell it rides nice and level. However, they are not designed for supporting weight, so with a full load of gear, the dogs, and the 255/85/16's, I was rubbing in the rear before we left the neighborhood.
I had bought a rear cargo carrier that I attached some lights to and an Toyota license plate holder from a 2nd gen tire carrier. Here is a pic of the setup at night:
Well, the cargo carrier had to go, and we dumped the water and opted to refill the water and gas containers once we got to Presidio.
I know I can recenter the rear to help, but what about stiffening it up? Will an AAL help? Airbags? new springs?
I liked the idea of the rear carrier, but even with a raised shank, it could bump when crossing a steep ditch. Has anyone seen of or heard of a system that would allow you to use a rear cargo carrier on the way to the trail and then detach the basket from the rear and attach it to the roof when you hit the trail? It would allow you get better mpg on the way out, and then better weight distribution on the trail.
