The abilities of the liberty will surprise you. I'd say CRD if you can find one. Mine has 135k hard miles and doesn't miss a beat. Keeping on top of your maintenance is key.

196,000 on this old girl, still runs like new rides way better than when it had 100 miles on it
Hunting for another 04 with low mileage to start building up

220K on our 2004 Renegade liberty 6 cly. I changed the oil and went thru it on Tuesday. It was up to the full mark before I dumped the oil and it runs as quiet as a new one. It is hard to shift in 4 WD and you really need to pull it firmly to get it fully engaged. In its life it's had a radiator, AC compressor, idler pulley, breaks and a sensor on the throttle body that the dealer replaced. It's never really been off road but it's been a great runner. I'd buy one with 90k miles and some rust.

test drove that thing twice! Looked through everything twice. Everything looked and felt right. 200.000km on the clock. And guess what, just noticed a burning oil smell... hard to see, but I'm afraid that the left head gasket is gone... $$$$$ I could cry...

Well I have no experience with Liberty's and even less of an opinion, so I'll just work to get us off-topic.

With thoughts of easier riding for the wife and simply cruising back roads, the Forester: ExPo Subaru Project thread has seriously piqued my curiosity.

We had head gasket go on my wife's 2002 Subaru. Had a local mechanic do it for about $680... look around cause we had quotes from other mechanics for twice that. So it is not the end of the world... I know heartbreaking, but you can recover and still have a great vehicle.

Most likely just the valve cover gasket, simple to fix, takes 15/20 minutes. What you are smelling is the oil dripping down on the exhaust. Again easy fix
Don't give up on it if you like it. There have been a few with the same issue with about that many miles , no worries

Agreed, it's most likely the valve cover gasket. One it warms up again, it's on my list of things to fix on our Liberty before my wife drives it to the PNW.

Agree ^^^ I have owned two Liberty's one gas and the diesel version... they do some what well off road, but they have a very limited and expensive aftermarket and they are not all that reliable, especially the diesel. They are uncomfortable, the seats suck and the interior cloth get stained by even water. You would think they would be roomy, but they are not very roomy. Sounds like the one you are looking at could have t-case problems but more than likely the linkage to the shifter needs adjusting...

What do you mean by well outfitted? What are your plans for the vehicle? If you are planning on modifying it look up jeepinbyal and rock lizard they are they only ones who make decent parts for the Liberty.

I drove my KJ CRD everywhere... but I'm an excellent driver.
