ABS fried by jump start

Wondered if ya all could give me a hand with the abs sensor on a 2007 tacoma. Son told me he thinks he fried the sensor from a bad jump start. He's taken it to a dealer and was quoted $1300.00 for the sensor. I think his issue is that there is no speedometer working on the dashboard because the speed sensor is connected / controlled by the abs sensor. This correct? I see where some of the other abs threads suggest pulling the fuse to disable the abs sensor, how does this effect the speedometer? If we need to replace the sensor any recommendations on suppliers of discount toyo parts or after market or reman sensors? I'm doing this over the phone with him as he's a thousand miles away LOL.

$1300 is highway robbery.

Step 1
Buy a $100 gps unit

Step 2
Sticky tape it over the non-functioning speedo

Step 3
Keep your eyes open for a wrecked tacoma you can pull the part from.

My wife's car, a 2005 Hyundai Tucson had the Airbag dash light come on. I took it into the dealer. They charged me $340 dollars for computer time and diagnostic time to determine that it was the airbag display unit. They pointed out that the passenger airbag light didn't come on at all. The replacement unit was $360 dollars.

I declined, drove home, took the unit apart and replaced the $3 bulb inside it. Works like a charm.

He crossed the leads while jump-starting and blew a speed sensor? A scan tool will tell him which sensor is bad.

Speed Sensors don't usually "blow" from a bad jump-start. Main fuses in the bottom of the fuse block do and usually a control unit or two gets taken out before the fuse blows.
We're back to scan tool time. It will show "fault codes" for the ABS system and also show "live data" during a test drive to determine what the sensors are doing...

YMMV RON

PS you'll need a "real" scan tool not the generic type at the parts store....

Much more likely that the connector to the speed sensor is corroded/broken/come loose.

If I remember correctly the speed sensor is NOT abs sensor. They are different.

Speedomoter sensor is bolted onto the transmission.

Looks sort of like this. This one is off a 1st gen Tacoma.

DO NOT pay the dealer this amount! Take it to a regular mechanic. The job might be as simple as unbolting two 10mm bolts and a cable connector. Sometimes these take 15 minutes to replace.

summerprofit, sadly the gps idea is a no go, the truck has to be repaired to pass inspection.
1911 this issue was caused by a bad jump start, no connection problem

gsron I believe he took it to two independent mechanics which indicated that it was either the abs module or something else. what I did was get online and search for the part and it's msrp is only 1044.00 so the dealer is adding another $300.00 + labor to install. I told him to check the other two local dealers to see what the price is at their locations. All the other dashboard instrumentation operates only the speedo is dead. I think we could use a wiring diagram to show the location of the fuse for the abs and verify that the fuse is ok, would be nice if it's only a fuse.

Anyone have any good threads here (or elsewhere ) which can help me understand the abs system, diagrams etc

chmura this is a bit complicated for me as this is long distance help for someone who is really not a gear head. That and I'm not a tacoma guy, so I don't know the systems that toyota has in place etc. That said I would like to delve into the abs system a bit more and find out what the system parts are and how they actually function, I have a feeling this may be an easy fix (as gsron suggested) but I really don't know at this point.
