"In total, the elderly Porsche suffered 27 separate breakdowns during the course of its 15,000-mile odyssey".

an adventure junkie or was it a dare?!

Too cool! I absolutely love stories like this.

In a similar vein, a guy in my neck of the woods took a 911 to Ocotillo. Not nearly as epic a journey though.

911s are great. Think back to Mr. Meyer's Manx, just a little more horsepower and a full body. Goes to show what 2wd in the right hands can do. The video did show a caption of 1983 911 completely stock. Rear did look like the torsion bars had been reset to do some lift.

The Porsche 944 was accompanied by a Mitsubishi Shogun 4x4 on the trip - so it wasn't traveling solo.... a couple of pics show it being towed too.

When you always choose the "easyiest" route, do some detours - all cars are able to drive through africa.

That is nothing new:

When you look in details, that people mostly did the east route, from Egypt downwards.

Also the west route is possible, each year you find more tar roads.

But you will leave out some interesting regions - the origon areas - where the locals dont often see tourists. There the people dont ask for food or money, and are more shy - much nicer for travelling!

I have just finished reading the book about the trip: "Survival of the Quickest" by Ben Coombs.
It's a fantastic read and an honest one. If you like books about Africa travel describing the country then this book is probably not for you. If you enjoy motoring adventure stories, then this book makes a good read. The author writes frankly about the stress he felt, the odd team dynamics (esp after a tough day) and his love/hate relationship with his co-driver.

Check out more via my blog: Overland Live

The authors next adventure is to drive a V8 Corvette and Rolls Royce from London to Vietnam. Should be another interesting read.
