Adding a 150 series Toyota to the stable

I've settled on adding a 150 series Toyota to the family and will be starting my search in the next week. Since the prado isn't available in the states I'm looking either at the gx460 or a 5th gen 4 runner.

Id like a proper full Build but something suitable for driving 2-3 hour stretches on the Tarmac -- an Everyman type of rig.

I am starting to see aftermarket limitations with parts. Has anyone gone this route? What do I need to know?

Good luck on the search. As far as the 5th gen 4runner goes, I'd argue that it is one of the most well supported vehicles in the aftermarket community. What types of parts are you concerned about? All the standard "build" mods are supported - especially for the type of "everyman" build you are looking to do.

Why would a GX 460 be preferred over a 4runner TE or vice versa?

This will be a moderate build as my wife will be driving it.

If you have the wallet and patience to get the parts, the GX is...a Lexus- luxury throughout, smooth V8. The 4R is cheaper and you can get aftermarket stuff quickly. It also has a factory rear locker.

Any pricing yet on the TRD pro 4R? Looks like it would be super spendy.

Also, what about diesel rumors in 2014? I might wait and purchase in the fall once I know what my options are.

Until I see a diesel with my own eyes...I am not counting on it. ;) More likely not until model year 2015-16....still have my doubts.

I don't think the TRD Pro will be too bad, most likely be priced like the already existing Tacoma Baja package [$5,015]. Guessing it will still be cheaper
than the Lexus GX460, plus being a bit more dirt friendly right off the showroom floor than the GX will be with aftermarket.
