AEV Procal, not quite idiot proof...

Or maybe I'm just a superior idiot?

Just had new 34x10.5x17 KO2s installed last week. I was pleasantly surprised, my 14 JKU still had plenty of pep. Despite the measly 3.21 gears, and auto I was very happy, great torque and plenty of acceleration for me. The KO2s measure 32" so not a huge jump. Of course in my research on tires, I repeatedly read that it would be a dog, need gears, etc.

Despite being happy enough I went ahead and ordered the AEV Procal. Because if I'm happy now, just wait! Correcting for those 2-3" of tire is going to be EVEN BETTER!

Got it and couldn't wait to try it out. But we're rounding up the kids and headed to dinner, PERFECT, road test!

Flipped the switches, click click, BEEP BEEP. Success!

Off to dinner, we changed our minds. Not the local eatery, the one in the Valley. At the first touch of the gas pedal, I knew something was wrong, but hey I need to give it more than that right? Well we live at the top of the town pretty much, not much of test down the hill to the freeway entrance.

Hit the on ramp, and "UH OH". I have it pinned and I'm holding steady at 3000rpm and gradually picking up steam. Luckily the on ramp didn't merge and it was not a big deal, but I knew I had screwed something up pretty good.

We had a uneventful dinner and took the surface streets back, during which it threw a CEL, or MILF or whatever Jeep calls it. Going back up the hill, was touch and go. I really wasn't sure right at the final push to the crest, but we made it.

We get home and and I'm looking at the still set pins and they are correct? Then it dawned on me.....

IT WAS UPSIDE DOWN!

How embarrassing...

So now to fix the Jeep. First I did the correct program for the tires. No difference. So WTH did I actually program the first time? Well I flipped it upside down again and decoded the pins..and I had changed the axle gear ratio to who knows what. lol

So a quick program back to 3:21 and success! My jeep is back to pretty much exactly what it was before, albeit the speedo and odometer are slightly more correct, lol.

So, just a friendly reminder. Make sure the Procal is oriented the correct way when programming it... And AEV if you're reading this, I'd call it a failure outside of the design parameters. A simple arrow may have prevented this.

But of course, when you think you it's idiot proof along comes a better idiot!

Are you running any lift with those 34's? Aftermarket wheels? I have 3.21's with an auto also and EVERYTHING that I have read makes it seem like its foolhardy to think that you can run bigger tires with that set up.

They only measure 32". My rig is bone stock. There are zero issues with clearance, or power. I have not cycled the suspension yet. It does look like when the front tires are stuffed while turned there may be some contact with plastics. Easily fixed if needed. Can't report on mileage, since I didn't even use a full tank before using the Procal. The tires are considerably heavier, so I expect some loss in MPG.

I would not hesitate to run a tire that measured up to 33" in a stock JKU and 3.21 gears.

Mine is a 3.8, so can't comment on the same being true for a 3.6.

We have a new JKU and just added 33" tires with 3.73 gearing. Still debating on the Procal. What benefits have you seen other than the speedometer and odometer correction?

Not enough data to comment. I doubt you would see any measurable difference.

FWIW: I still consider the Procal and excellent investment. I like that my odometer and speedo are correct. It makes MPG and range calculations simple. I also plan of future mods where the Procal will come in handy.

I have the superchip procal. You will see more consistant shifting, at the right times, and since everything is working right, you will see improved milage. You will not be any faster etc.

Making everything work correctly is what I am looking for. I would also like the ability to increase idle for winching and a possible mpg increase. It sounds like a good investment. I'm not interested in going faster. We like to take our time and take in the scenery.

The superchip flashcal is a great unit because it has the display on it so you can see exactly what you are doing, instead of dip switches.
