A friend of mine went down on the freeway doing about 60. Landed on his stomach and did the Superman thing as he slid to a stop. A lot of luck and all his safety gear let him walk away with just bruises. The bike didn't fare quite as well and his safety gear needed to be replaced, but not even a trip to the hospital for him. We emphasize safety gear every class. It would be great if ATGATT would become "cool" in the local bike culture. I shudder every time I see someone in shorts and a tank top.

Safety gear is no guarantee that you won't be injured, but the lack of safety gear is pretty much a guarantee that you will.
