We've had some rotten weather for about a week, (I know I know one whole week?) and yesterday found us with beautiful sunny cold day (cold for us
- mid 30's). So about 11:30am we decided to check out the southern end of Death Valley. It's had a bunch of rain for a couple of weeks and we wanted to check the Armagossa river that runs into DV.
Got a pic just before we headed out:
We stopped in Shoshone, picked up some lottery tickets and kept going. (of course just threw my money away).
The road from Shoshone to DV leads over two passes, Salsberry and Jubilee and the road has some very nice vistas:
The snow capped range are the Panamints.
We suspect come March/April this view will be covered with wild flowers. We will probably head down each weekend starting early March.
There are not too many tracks off the main road to DV that we haven't already explored, so we checked out the remaining ones. They all deadend as they eventually end up at the DV boundary.
We eventually arrived at the West Side Road turn off and found this:
You can see the West Side road continuing beyond.
The Panamints looking down on everything.
As one can see, the river was much higher just a few days ago, probably at least 4' higher. There was a Honda Pilot sitting on the side of the road and the people were milling around looking at????
Here's the river:
So we decided to check the ford and found it quite OK.
Just beyond the ford was a big puddle in the road that I took too fast and got the rig muddy. Living in the desert, we don't care much for the dirty water and such and found this not to our liking:
So for the last side trip, we headed up to the Ashford mine. Close to a 4 mile trek to the trail head to the mine. 2 pics as we were heading up the road:
We were back home by 4:30pm but had a great time.
We're hoping on keeping a close eye on the spring bloom in the Valley this year. Several years ago there was an incredible desert bloom that was world famous and with the amount of rain DV has gotten, this year could be close.
