An interesting problem

My mother in law told me today that my brother in law may give (yes give) us his dakota. Its like a 2005 but i am not sure. I thought it was 4wd but now i am not sure, and it really doesn't matter. The problem is the truck is about 5 hrs away in Ohio and I am in pa. It doesn't sound like it has a current registration. I need to figure out how to get the truck and title back here to PA to register it here. How do you go about this. I really can't find much info on the internet. Any information would be appreciated.

Just go to the Ohio BMV and get a temporary registration. The fee is $18.50 for 30 days. They'll want to see the bill of sale and title for the vehicle. Scotch-tape the temp registration in the truck's rear window, and drive home.

Here's a web page that talks about the temporary registration.

You can also check with the PS DMV, NY used to issue a 30 day tag for an out of state purchase. I gave them a VIN #, flew to SC and drove my FJ40 back to NY....

Buy it on a Friday and write up an honest bill of sale. IMHO you can comfortably drive with the bill of sale in your possession until Monday when the DMV is open. You may indeed be pulled over (and it will be used as an excuse for checking seat belts, ticketing you for speeding, etc), but the BoS should be adequate. More important is to notify your insurance agent IMMEDIATELY after purchasing the vehicle so that you are covered on your policy (I would do this before driving it a single mile).

Insurance should be the easy part and a no brainer. It would be helpful if it wasn't 5 hours away. Probably rent a car and make the trip in a day. I don't trust our 2004 Pacifica with 265,000 miles for the trip.
