Those of you in the Northwest with interest in UNIMOGs might want attend next weekend's Northwest MogFest, one of the--if not the--largest gathering of Unimogs in North America. Counting a sprinkling of Pinzgauers, G-Wagens, Haflingers, Volvo C303s, VW Synchos and other European miscellany (like my Sprinter ;) ) we had about sixty vehicles and a hundred participants last year.

Of particular interest to this group, there will be all manner of "expedition" Mogs to see, including those of adventurers stopping by in the middle of their North American expeditions. (Even the ex-Hiscox Camper Mog--still for sale, BTW--is expected to be there, should you like to see what eight tons of off-road motorhome looks like.)

There are many fun activities, like the midnight drag races, the women's backhoe competition, chances to ride in and/or drive all types of Mogs, and a nifty obstacle course designed to show off the Mog's outstanding off-road capability.

Most every model, shape and configuration of Mog made will be attending,

as well as Mogs of all sizes.

The MogFest is held near Sheridan, Oregon, which is itself about 50 miles west of Portland. The facilities are outstanding, there's camping available, and good food is served at meal times.

HOWEVER, this is absolutely NOT a public event. It was, until the year a bunch of local idiots brought their crappy rigs, raised hell, had one catch on fire and almost burned down the farm. Quite a story . . . and I never did get my fire extinguisher back. :(

Anyway, you need to be "invited" to this private event. If you are interested in Unimogs, you should attend and you will be very welcome. But you have to go to:

http://northwestmogfest.com/

then go to the contact page and tell the registration people you'd like to come. They will then get back to you with the necessary information.

As you can tell, liability concerns make it necessary to have a small hoop to jump through, but if you are interested in learning more about Unimogs and other interesting European vehicles, you couldn't do better than to attend this unique event.

Post up any questions you have.

BAHHHHH, I'm gonna be out and about the WHite Salmon otherwise I would LOVE to come see all your great trucks. I had no idea there was such a strong following of MOGS around here. Although I gotta admit I've been seeing a few lately. I also used to run a Wildland Engine for Portland Fire Mogs. Ever heard of them??

Cheers

Yeah, I remember Portland Firemog. I got my Mog in 2002, so there was some overlap. Andrew used to post to the Mog Mailing List fairly often. Also had Dave Russell from Montana and one or two other wildland fire guys. Don't see so much of the mog fire units any more; I seem to recall Dave said something about the Federal requirements for the wildland trucks changing. (Actually, I wanted to buy Dave's U140L, but all the fire gear made it too valuable to strip for my camper.)

Sorry you can't make it this year, but plan ahead . . . it's always the third weekend in August.

Yep, once they started requiring CAFS systems on the trucks Vince couldn't keep it afloat. I will try to remember this next year for sure, I can't belive all the cool trucks you folks have.

Their is no requirement for CAFS systems on Wildland fires. It may have been another issue about contract engines, I will have spent almost 1.5 million building wildland fire trucks by the end of 09 and no CAFS systems. But what do I know, I only work for the State of Utah-Wildland Fire program.

What I belive it turned out to be was a large political SNAFU... Vince and his partners, becasue of the advanced positions we were able to access with the MOGS, were being pressured and eventualy required by the State of Oregon to have a CAFS system present. They were also taking ALOT of flack because we needed fewer engines to get the same acre's covered... Basicly they De-Mob'd a bunch of engines when we showed up. that put a few other contractors out of work on more than one ocasion and frankly they were long time contract holders and that dodn't make them happy... So much for the best guy getting the job.

Kind of reminds me of Fire department recruiting... Hire un-qualified, untrained "diverse" populations of people because politics aparently have anything to do with puting out a fire and saving lives ;)

But what would I know...

Cheers
