Another New Guy

Hi all,

I've posted on one other thread so far, but thought I would introduce myself here. I'm another new guy with a Jeep.

My name is Patrick but I picked up the nickname Bear when I was young (has to do with my last name). My wife and I love to explore, travel, and see new things. Our kids are almost out of high school so we'll be DINKS soon! Then...look out world! :rally_guys:

I spent some time in the USAF and was able to live in the UK for a couple of years (not to mention the ~14 months in Saudi Arabia - I loved driving the suburban with the 454 along the freeways or the occassional Hummer Alpha across the desert!)

I've wanted a Jeep my whole life and I finally got one in 2006. I've been building it up and having a blast doing it. I've attached a list (in another thread: http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1118) that covers what I have done so far...and what I want to do in the future.

I have to say, I am absolutely amazed at the completeness and level of information available here. The openness of the members is refreshing.

Here are some pics of the Jeep...

jh504: Idaho is fantastic. I'm <2 hours from Yellowstone, and a whole world of forest service roads / trails. I've only been on this side of the State for about a year, but it is a Sportman's PARADISE. (Maybe I should keep it a secret...but we are among friends)

KSJEEP: So far so good, Michelle and I travelled across the Magruder corridor View attachment 19312 last year without any problems. Jeep seemed big enough. I am really in need of a better box for the back. I also want an AT trailer like just about everyone else on this site:drool:
Also, congrats on your retirement! I'm ex-USAF too, but not a retiree. I just spent 8 years in.

1speed: yeah...I really like your rig...very well done bro! The fenders rock. I'm looking at the poison spyder crusher corners and front fenders someday.

Beauty. Nice rig, and I'm really liking that 3rd photo with the valley in the background.

No shortage of beautiful scenery up here.

From original post:
1st pic is at the Owyhees in southwestern Idaho.

2nd pic was taken of the Tetons from the Wyoming side in January.

3rd pic is heading up Big Southern Butte near Blackfoot, Idaho.

4th is near Grimes pass near Idaho City, Idaho.

Here are some more from great Idaho spots, not all with the Jeep, but we have taken it there too...

Stolle Meadows near Warm Lake, Idaho...

When i mentioned the Magruder corridor, I failed to mention that is the only road that traverses between two HUGE Wilderness areas in Idaho; the Frank Church River of no Return, and the Selway-Bitteroot areas. Together they are ~4.5 million acres of Wilderness areas.

Thanks for all the nice comments on the rig everyone!

Welcome to forum Bear -

I'm two hours on the other side of Yellowstone NP from you. I love this area and SE Idaho. Tons to see in this remote region.

Nice tip on the Magruder Corridor. I had no idea there was trail tying the two areas together. A couple of years ago I made the trip from Shoup, ID up to Darby, MT. What a remote trail that was but lots of burn up there. Hopefully the heavy winter will keep the fires down this summer.

I would love to take a 3 day weekend later this summer and make a loop from Flagg Ranch (in Grand Teton NP) on the Grassy Lake Road over to Ashton, ID. Then take the trail from Island Park west through Kilgore over to Modina and return to West Yellowstone via Red Rock Pass Road.

I may be getting some of the trail names mixed up, but it would make for a great run. With the numerous Portal members in the (Logan, UT ~ Pocatello ~ Idaho Falls ~ Bozeman, MT & WY)area, perhaps it's time to plan a group run in Yellowstone Country....

kcowyo,

we just got back from a day trip up to the Island Park area. It's always a beautiful drive.

We took the scenic byway in the way home from IP to Ashton, it takes us by Mesa Falls which are flowing pretty heavy right now. I'll post some pics tomorrow.

A group trip could be quite a bit of fun. FLYFISHEXPERT and I are planning on the Ashton to Flagg trip this summer sometime. I'll need to make sure he sees this post...
