another question

i am also looking at a 84 ROW defender with a NA 2.5 diesel, but my question is what kind of tranny and transfer case is in it? it is all stock nothing was ever changed in the truck. so what kind of Tranny and transfer case was put in those trucks? are they solid? i am assuming it is a LT77?

lt95 was only used behind the 3.5 v8. A 2.5 na would have an lt77 and most likely a 1.6 ratio lt230. You aren't likely to hurt a drive train with a 2.5 natural.

what if i were to put a 200 TDI in it? would i need to change those things? i know 200 TDI's have the LT77

It bolts up, but the early LT77 is weaker than the newer ones and you will want a 1.4 t-case or bigger tires. If it is a 110 2.5NA it will have come with a 1.6. A 90 2.5NA will have the 1.4 LT230 T-case.

Each LT230 has a serial number stamped into it and I think it is the prefixes that ID what ratio that is in there originally. See Ashcroft trans for the prefix coding. Ashcroft also has a good description of the development of the LT77 indicating relative improvements.

Early LT77 will happily take a 200Tdi unless you drive like a prat. It's not 'weaker than'; it's simple not as strong...

LT230 with 1.66 will go nice with big tyres but not with standard so throw in a 1.22 or 1.44. The 1.22 DIsco T box matches well wit the slightly different early LT77 gear set if you run 235/85x16
