Anyone been able to sound proof-ish a series?

I realize it's a little on the primitive side....but I just stick those little foam bits in my ears.

They're cheap, portable, don't contribute to any corrosion forming condensation, and certainly don't remove any paint ;)

Did that for 5 years. Then I stuck noise cancelling earphones in my ears. Now I'm ready to move past that.

Thanks. My current plan is to spray down the lizard skin coating (both sound and heat proofing) paint-stuff. Then cover with probably one of those dynamat knock offs or dynamat equivalent (or maybe dynamat if I can actually find it for a good price!).

Only issue I have now is trying to find a "finish" for the inside of the vehicle, unless I can figure out how to make the dynamat application look fancy.

Also seriously considering doing a full cosmetic re-do on the 109. The body is all beat to crap and a fresh coat of paint would look spiffy. I remember seeing a youtube of some guys doing a roller paint job. But then they sprayed it over with custom paint in a spray can. Then I thought, why don't I just get a box of custom spray paint made up and do the entire truck like that!! Would be nice to have the old girl looking like a show truck again.

Anyway, thanks for all of the input!
Synthetic automotive carpet works well. Use the short pile stuff, not the chorded loop pile carpet so often used in the car and marine trade - that stuff traps dirt and moisture. For above the waist line, use leather effect vinyl cloth on high density 1/4-1/2" foam or on exterior grade ply panels. Those two surfaces will give a professional appearance and will also help with noise reduction while being minimally absorbent to moisture and easily cleaned.

Thank you again for the information. Can you elaborate more on the "synthetic automotive carpet"? I am not familiar but would like to learn more! Any links to what I should be looking for or can I just google that?

You have already done the vent and door seals, good. One thing I found that was cheap and very effective was to put insulation on the underside of the transmission tunnel. It cut way down on the noise and heat.

Also, make sure there are no unplugged holes in the bulkhead or seat box. It is amazing how much noise and heat can pass through a 1/4 inch hole. I have found the access panels under the seats are a little fiddly to get sealed without using duct tape.

James' comments are very good - you'd be surprised at how many holes are in a typical seat base, with noise getting through gaps under the inspection lids (draught tape from a hardware store around the edges of the apertures helps with that).

By automotive carpet, I meant the short, straight pile synthetic carpets, as found in modern cars. I once bought two rolls of car carpet with just such a pile and also with 1/2 solid felt backing. I think the 8x4' rolls cost me £20 each and were ideal for the 109. They were replaced when I rebuilt the vehicle with rubberised matting made by the same chap who does the molded cab trim (WrightOffRoad.co.uk). I' sure that you would find retailers of carpet or rubber matting in your area - I don't think my suorces would be of much use to you over there!

Thanks again.

Yeah, that is an issue for me, the access panels on the seat box. I've got MOD gas tanks so being able to pull them out and put them back in is a must. However I might be able to add some small sealing to help with it.

If you haven't already, you should checkout http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi.

The guy has some interesting discussion about what works, what doesn't, and why. The discussion about why adding multiple layers of material like Dynamat doesn't help to kill additional noise was very informative to me.

The site looks like it is under reconstruction, but I was still able to read a lot of interesting stuff on it. Thanks for the link.
