Anyone familiar with upper Michigan?

Looking to go on a camping/hunting trip this year to northern Michigan, but probably south of the UP. I'm not familiar with Michigan at all, but I just moved here so I figured it would be a good trip to do some exploring. Any suggestions for a nice route or area would be great.

Thanks.

I grew up in Leelanau county, head up to traverse City and then go out to the Sleeping Bear Dunes.
Tons of great Deer hunting up there and fishing everywhere.
There's a huge festival in TC, Cherry Fest.

Is outside
Beaver and Mantoulin islands and what Pablo said said. Also a dune wilderness area around west coastal side mid way up (not sleeping bear dunes though) I forgot the name

Head up around Traverse City as suggested. I used to live there and now my wife and I have started making annual trips up there. We usually start in TC, then head to Mackinaw Island, then into the U.P. Heading up there next month actually. If you head to the U.P., there's a great place to get a cabin in Germfask. We usually stay there on the Manisitque river and head out from there. Seney wildlife refuge is near by, and we usually spend time at the light houses on Lake Superior. Wish I had the money to buy some land up there. Enjoy exploring your new surroundings.
