Anyone make a camper trailer with attached ground tent?

I own a 24' featherlite toy-hauler but would like to down size for more remote locations..

What I'm looking for is a small hard side camper which only contains the toilet, shower and kitchen.. Then a attached tent would be for sleeping living..

Does something like that exist?

I've gotten away from the RV side of things since getting rid of my travel trailer, but in all my browsing RV manufacturers websites and floorplans I can't remember anything like you describe. I could see maybe doing a cargo trailer conversion where the box held the kitchen and bath and then you rig an attached tent - like maybe one of those that has an opening to attach to the back of a SUV or something. It could probably be done but I think you may be looking at a custom build to get there. Good luck with your search.

Yea thanks, it doesn't look like anyone makes such a setup. Its either all the whistles and bells, or non. Nothing halfway..

We have one of the side tent beds that you bolt into the side of the trailer and it folds out. It would be great in a cargo trailer conversion. You may look into Aliners Cabin A. It's small and self contained but it would need beefed for offroad use.

Definitely! What brand do you have, or which should I consider?

Another problem I'm seeing is most small cargo trailers don't utilize the foot print with wheels that stick out needing fenders. I'm not seeing any 10'-12' cargo's with inside wheel wells like my 8'6" wide featherlite..

Now that is neat. What about using an awning with a floor and side walls. Or an awning and a tent like an Oztent or Tepui awning extension.

Oztent makes an awning caravan connector that fits in a sail track and allows you to zip to the awning of an oztent/jet tent awning. It would make a slick setup with the awning side walls attached.

Have you thought about building your own? I bought a little utility trailer, and a friend is welding a frame for the minimal hardside and a rack for the roof top tent I bought used on here. With a new axle, 20 gal water tank, wheels and tires to match my jeep, tent, etc, I think I'll be in it about $2500. The tent and trailer only cost me $450 total. Plus, using the forum here and watching guys build their own has given me ideas on what I really need. Good luck!

I use an 11' x 11' tent at the of rear of my trailer.

The last trip in July I stayed at a real campground and had water sewer and electric.

I used a large shower base and a portable toilet, set up behind a shower curtain. The trailer sat on a gravel base, so no real issue just dumping a gallon or so of water out on the ground. I use an L-5 hot water heater. The tent does support a woodstove as well.

A lot to be said about getting a hot shower first thing in the morning

Thanks Titanpat. I paged through your build and I'm impressed. Nice work!

How do you make a water tight connection from the trailer to tent?

It seems to me, I would have enough patients setting up my sleeping tent. But I wouldn't want to set up a bathroom, nor want to worry about a gust off wind making me the butt of the campground jokes for years to come..:coffeedrink:

I would also have a furnace in the trailer which would heat both the trailer and tent. Id love to build my dream trailer a hardside pop top, but I cant find any popup shower enclosures.. Or a drop-down trailer where there is only a small step up from the tent to trailer when down.
