Anyone running 255/80R17 on a JK?

I'm contemplating my tire choices for my 2010 JKU Sport and since I don't intend to do a lift and/or regear right now I want to stick with ~33" tires.

I'm looking at 285/70R17 Hankook Dynapro ATM's which would be better for me for winter driving as this is my DD, however the 255/80R17 BFG KM2's have caught my attention and they appear to be a nice option.

The advantage with the KM2's would be not having to run spidertrax 1.5" spacers given the narrower width. I have KM2's on my YJ and absolutely love them.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience running these on their JK?

I'll check that out.

I'm definitely going to have 35's on here some day, but I just bought it and don't want to incur the additional cost of regearing et al right now. I have a tendancy to be a perfectionist so I would have to have the AEV premium 3.5" lift, lockers etcetera. I'll just wait a couple years until I can get this thing paid off, then I can mod it to my hearts desire!:coffeedrink:

I have seen some on jk-forum.com. I think they are nice. I really want to get some, I'm running 285s now, but think the 255s would be better for road trips.

I like the idea that with the 255s I could get away with the stock wheels without spacers. The 285's would probably be better for on-road handling / daily driving, but it looks as though even with a leveling kit I'll need some spidertrax spacers to avoid rubbing. I've only found one pic so far of a JKU on 255's, it did look pretty good, but I'd like to see a few more.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience running these on their JK?

I'm running the 255/85-16 which is the same overall size as the 255/80-17. Couldn't be happier with them. Excellent road manners and great traction off-road. Zero issue on stock 7" wide wheels in regards to rubbing, none off-road with the 8" wide ProComp 7069s either. I do get a bit of rub on the flares now with the aftermarket rims when the suspension fully compresses on-road (very hard dips.) I'll run these until BFG wakes up and creates a 10" to 10.5" wide 35" tall MT tire.

On-road wise the 255 will actually handle better than the 285. Particularly when on the highway or rutted roads, you'll get less tracking of grooves.

mdnky, Nice looking JK! I definitely like the way those look. I broke down and just ordered a set of 255/75R17 Hankook Dynapro ATM's for now just to get rid of the lousy goodyear SRA's that come standard on the 2010 sport. I'm likely going to do a 3.5" AEV lift and 35's in a couple years time anyway so if all goes well the Hankooks should last until I am ready to upgrade. I'm with you though, I would love to see a 35x10.50R17 option in a BFG KM2!

Sorry I am a bit late....

I have a 2010 JKU Auto too.
I have had the 255/80/R17 on my jeep NO issues. I didn't buy them as I am waiting to wear out my 255/75/R17 that came stock.

But I will be using the 255/80/R17 KM2's when it is time to replace... Oh and they are cheaper than the stock tire when purchased from Costco! :victory:


I have set up some ply wood storage in the rear of the jk and will say that it is a MUST have. If I can take pics tonight I will post them up as soon as I can.

Basically 3/4 inch ply wood decking and some 1"x2" cross bars behind the Roll Bar and a vertical support for the middle rear of the shelf. The Decking is two parts allowing for easy removal and is carpeted. I love it.

96 disco some cheap easy to do mods that are well worth the time and Little money they cost are:

1. relocate Breather hoses to the same or near same level. Front Diff, Trans Case, and Auto Tranny can all be extended up to the engine compartment. Rear Diff can be extended behind the rear passenger tail light.

2. Cheap and easy grill Screen Mod using gutter mesh, zip tie blocks, and super glue.

3. B&M Auto Trans cooler

4. I would HIGHLY recommend a Poison Spyder Customs Evap Canister Skid to keep that expensive piece of plastic mounted under your trail capable vehicle protected. Cost about $100 and worth EVERY PENNY.

Most of these can be searched at JK Owners forum or JK Forum and and a write up has already been done.

I've already ordered the poison spyder evap skid plate and won't venture off road until it's on. I am definitely adding the trans cooler in the spring and will probably do the breather extensions too. I will probably leave the grill alone for now though.

One addition that is a bit high in price but I feel totally worth it was the Aeroforce OBD Scan Gauge. It is called the Aeroforce Interceptor. It allows you to read Tons of gauge info from the ECM and also allows you to change tire size, gear ratio, and other jeep specific parameters. i have been using mine to monitor Transmission Temps and Torque Converter Lock.

Good call on the Poison Spyder Skid.... It is an excellent product.

I'll have to look into that Aeroforce scanner. I was contemplating picking up the AEV programmer but I don't know if it lets you read codes and/or trans temps or not. Thanks for the info.

Scott, thanks for the clarification on the AEV programmer. I may still go with it given the reasonable price and all the other functionality. I'll definitely be looking at this size when I'm ready to get a second set of wheels/tires for the JK unless I end up going to 35's later on with the AEV 3.5 lift which is what I'd really like to do. :)
