Looks like a cool program but I've never tried open source stuff.

Gimp is pretty powerful, if you know how to use it. There is a bit of a learning curve, especially if you're used to Photoshop (different ways of doing things.) I wouldn't recommend it in a production environment, but it's easily as capable as Photoshop CS or CS2 for non-professional uses.
