Are Defenders overpriced?

My buddy I grew up with who now lives in Italy just shipped a 1990 D90 5speed 4cyc diesel 170k, locking diffs to Cincinnati Ohio and he's going to be asking $28,500 for it. It arrived Monday but wow that's some $$$. I'm asking him to look for a LC 78 for me. He says the D110 are hard to find over there.

Maybe I will see it driving around town ??

He has brought over 6 D90 and a FJ40 short cab and sold them all very quickly. He's searching for more and taking request now.

Yeah pretty overpriced. However guys who are buying these are using them to drive to Starbucks on Saturday mornings.

These and the JKs are the new "midlife crisis" cars. No longer Porsche 911s.

Also the economy has been wacked. Up until this year, many financial planners were saying, "keep cash, do not invest in the market". So now guys are sitting around with crap tons of cash. So in the past 5 years, "investment" cars have been huge. Cars and real estate have both been great markets for money lately. Either they hold their value or 2x their value over a few years.

Overall for $35k, I'd rather have an LR4.

Here in Colorado used JKs are going for crazy money. Several co workers have been offered good money for a 4-5 year old Jeeps. I sold my 1.5 year old 2013 JK for $500 over payoff a little over a year ago. The 1991 Defender 110 LHD from Spain I bought almost a year ago was in the low 20's and I have been driving it daily. I could sell it for breakeven or a little more today if i wanted today. The $50K plus ROW trucks are crazy as I think that is a very small market and too many are not as sound as they look when you really dig into them. The NAS trucks are a different story as already stated California helps keep that market on the high end and the Auto 97 commands the most since the mall crawlers love those.
The 911 market is still going crazy but I wonder how long that will continue along with the classic muscle car market. Fun to follow all the craziness.

Overpriced infers a comparision to something else.

Defender price in US vs ROW = yes
NAS Defender price in US vs ROW imported Defender in US = no
Defender in US vs comparable Land Cruiser = yes
Defender vs comparable 463 G-Wagon = no

I own trucks in Central America for my business down there and could buy any model Defender I want, right up to 2016.
Do i? Hell no. Land Cruiser for me.

Monthly, gringos driving Defenders will roll up next to me in my Land Cruiser and ask if I want to trade... I just chuckle...
