Chris, Jeremy, Nathan (and his little brother), Andrew and I just completed the Jerome to Flagstaff section of the traverse. Nothing too difficult, but beautiful and fun none the less. It is interesting how many of the roads I picked are already part of the GWT. I guess it just makes sense for the route to run that way.
The trail starts in Jerome. We had a great breakfast at the Red Rooster, though the service was slow/marginal.
Here is the BajaTaco heading down main street
The Gold King Mine, as we headed out of town.
Crossing the Verde is the biggest logistics challenge, which basically forces you to cross at Perkinsville. Not a bad spot to cross though. Has any taken the train through here? There is supposed to be a fun diner ride.
We tried a few side tracks to keep things interesting, but this one (though close), did not go through.
Continuing north, we left Perkinsville Road, and got into more interesting scenery and a narrow two track. Along the way, we found a fantastic ruin site. You can see why they built it here. 360 degree vantage point and easy to defend.
Andrew's awesome 70 series. This is the first trip I have been on where diesels outnumbered gas.
A few more dead ends, and we worked our way through the Coconino NF to Garland Prairie. This is where the section ends, and you have the choice to drive into Flagstaff, Williams or continue north on the traverse.
I am going to finish the last section north to the Grand Canyon, which will be the northern terminus of the AZ traverse.
