Last Friday two of my friends (Jack, Tim) and myself loaded up our ATV's and headed south out of Holbrook, AZ. We wasn't able to leave town until 5:30pm so our daylight was very limited. After heading west a few miles to get to the road that would take us south toward the Dry Lake we seemed to be racing a storm that was comming in from the S.West.

Thankfully it past, leaving us nice and dry. Our destination for the night was the area called the "Cracks" that is on a ridge overlooking the Dry Lake. We got to the Cracks just before dark and made camp down in a canyon to be protected from the wind that was blowing across the ridge from that storm we outran earlier. While picking up fire wood in the dark about 10 feet from our tent Jack encountered a Rattle Snake! Jack called out for me to come quickly with a light and my gun. He had just removed his sidearm a few minutes earlier And I was sill wearing mine. When I got near the snake he turned from Jack and charged at me and towards our camp. Unfortunatly something had to be done about the situation.

The next morning we broke camp by 6:30am and was off to explore the Cracks.

We went down into one of the Cracks and encountered a family of Owls. At two seperate times I had an Owl flying in my direction and I couldn't get my camera on in time to get the shot(*@!!$) but I did get one good one from behind.

From there we travelled to the east to explore an area we had not been to before. It proved to be a waist of time. Our destination for today was Heber, AZ. We had to go a little out of our way to remain on dirt tracks and roads to get to Heber but, it was a great route. We did run into a storm just before we reached Heber that dropped a little rain on us but nothing to heavy. After filling our tanks with gas we headed to the Red Onion for a Burger.
After great lunch we headed East on Hy. 260 for a few miles to get to the forest road that would take us North towards Aripine. We continued North thru Aripine to Hy. 277 where we had to go east only a 100' to get to Zeniff Rd. and this took us back to the Dry Lake. We then had to travel 3 miles on Hy. 377 to get back to a dirt road that would take us back to our route that brought us to this area last night. Then we retraced our route back to Holbrook.
We only ran 165 miles in 23 hours but it was a great time. I have been thinking about doing a more ATV travelling since reading about Mark and Francis the Canadian couple that travelled from the Canada border to Cabo San Lucas and back up to Kingman, AZ. on two ATV's. http://www.quadtrek.net/html/accueil_eg.htm
