Ford Ranger auto to manual trans swap
If anyone has any first hand knowledge I would be interested in any info regarding a 1998 Ranger auto to manual trans swap also. I did an internet search but didn't come up with much other than some general statements that it would be too involved.

I did this to my Nissan (A-M) it was fairly easy because the model came as a standard model also. I just bought a standard junker and swapped all the pieces. I had to re-tap some holes that were never used, but it was nice to have all the pieces that you might not think of like interior consoles or steering columns. I also switched computers just because I could, I also found a tag that my parts truck had a factory rebuilt motor in 2006. The 91 F150 you should be able to pick up the truck cheap enough and the 98 you can go back as far as 94 Rangers or Mazda's with the same engine.

You'll need pedal assemble, master cyl., all the lines, and the correct M50D-R1 transmission from a vehicle with the same engine (2.3, 3.0, 4.0 all different), go ahead and replace the slave cylinder while you're in there, they're known for leaking, also get everything from the back of the engine to the input shaft of the tranny. you'll need a new floorplate (from a SLA Ranger [unless you want to cut a hole in the floor for your shifter]), all interior trim pieces (boots and whatnot), steering column/manual guageset (if you want it to be completely stock looking), transmission wiring harness (attached to rear of engine harness), and computer from the same vehicle, same year, same engine, same options as your truck... I think I got it all... For the F-150 most everything I listed should be somewhat correct...

If folks knew how many you pull it yards are in your area they would get sick,:drool: I make about four trips down to Phoenix every years just to hit the yards. If I were doing the swap I'd try real hard to find a ZF transmission to upgrade to while you are at it. Pay your $2 and doing some searching at the yards this weekend should help you a lot to see what you are in for. I'd try running the same PCM first I've run manual and auto PCM on EFI swaps I've done and it hasn't made any difference. Did you ever get your camber problems figured out??
Thanks for all the information, very helpful. I bought the Ranger from Oregon State Surplus a couple years ago as a training car for my kids. The body and suspension are in great condition and the engine runs good but the trans slips some, it would be a shame to get rid of the truck when the trans goes. When it does go I would prefer a manual over an automatic, I’ll have to check wrecking yards for parts and prices. A good father-son project.
