autozone engine

I went an checked out this 90 Montero I have been seeing on craigslist. It has 274,000 on it and 80,000 on a engine bought from autozone in 2004 and professionally installed. It seem to run just fine started right up no smoke at all. The truck was in pretty good shape the owner was real knowledgeable about it. He had a stack recipients from the previous owner and it seemed that guy did everything, wheel bearings, time belt and water pump at 40,000 on the new engine. It did grind a little shifting in the lower gears but over it seemed nice. The big question is if that engine is good? Any one have any experience with autozone engines?

Thanks

its got 80K on it. You say it seams to run good and no smoke. What else proof do you need?

Not really here
I believe that autozone uses rebuilt cores from various companies. I'd say if its had at least 5,000 miles on it since that engine was put in then it's good to go. The grinding when shifting gears would be more of a concern to me pending you are used to driving a manual transmission.

I bought an engine from autozone. It never ran right. After spending 5000 plus trying to get it to run ok. I realized I should have bought a crate motor and been done.

Yeah I read some reviews about autozone engines and there not so good. Yeah the grinding is a concern,I was ups driver for few years so I used to stick. Oh well it's only $2000 and I'll try and get it for $1500 and see what happens.

Another question is that right now on my landcruiser I'm selling I have a great almost new set of Cooper 255/85/16 tires and I'm thinking I could buy a used set of tires and swap them out and put the coopers on the montero but I would need to buy some 16" rims and that seems to be problem. Any advice there

Thought about that but then would still need to buy new rims and tires to sell the Lc. I'm thinking of just buy some 31x10.5x15 they should be fine for what I do and better gas mileage then the 255s anyway
