Back Door Latch Rebuild, Montero / Pajero: Design Change, Ultimate Fix

I'm going all out on this attempt. I'm modifying the latch by removing the pivot rod and replacing it with stainless steel & loosening the tolerances a little bit. I'm sick of doing this every 3 years. IMG_1225.JPG

After cutting the pivot rod out with a zip cut on a dremmel, I was able to tap each end out with a punch. Now that I have the plastic handle separate from the bracket, it is obvious what was causing the sticking. The pivot rod was rusting to the bracket as well as binding on the plastic. I'll post up a picture when it is done. I'm sure I just permanently solved this problem, and it won't require constant lubrication anymore.

Come do mine, and if you could fix the terrible linkage design of the rear side doors that would be great as well. So sick of these doors.

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
I made a new one out of metal a bunch of years ago and it's going strong.

Ok, here it is. I buttoned up everything and I don't plan on ever needing to do this job again. I used stainless screws & locknuts, M4 x 1.0 and they were a little loose in the holes where the pivot rod used to be. The latch has never worked so good, I'd even go so far as to say this must be what it was like new. I knocked off as much rust as I could and hit it with a few coats of paint before I put it back together.

In total, if you have the tools and parts, this should be less than a 2hr job and I spent $2 on stainless hardware.

Man, this was such an easy fix and worked so well I would recommend it to everyone. If your original parts are still all there, try this fix before you do anything else!
