Offer them $600, that is about what they could get for it at a junkyard.

You must live in a JY friendly area - this would bring no more than $200 here.

How do the DMV fees get taken into account in your state? Here they would not pass to the buyer, but that could certainly be different state to state. It would be best to do the title transfer at the local DMV office IMHO.

Added: Oh yea, oil pump is toast? Engine could easily be junk now, no real way to tell without complete engine tear down and inspect. Personally I'd pass on this one. DOHC 3.5l engines are not that easy to find.

They own from 2013 , I live in CA . Going later today to the DMV to check if I have to pay for it or they have to pay .

an oil pump circulates oil in the engine. Without good oil circulation all kinds of things can happen to the motor. I wouldn't trust that motor as you have no clue how long the oil pump has been an issue. Couple that with back fees at the DMV, and my strong advice is to keep looking. There are enough Monteros in CA that you should be able to find one that needs far less attention and thus, has better value.

I have a hard time believing that the oil pump is bad - in the 12 years I've been participating in Montero forums I can't recall ever hearing of an oil pump failing on a 3.5 V6. That said, it's probably best to expect the worst, meaning that the engine is toast and will probably need to be replaced. Since you won't be able to run it, you can probably assume the A/C doesn't work either. It's a $500 vehicle if everything else is in decent cosmetic shape.

I'm new to the Montero world. I just picked up a 94 Sr someone did a 3.0 swap in it and when I crank and start it it makes a noise kind of like there's no oil getting to the top end has anybody had experience with the oil pump being bad and what it does.

Could be bad lifters. Could be a blown motor. Oil pump going bad would likely trash the motor. At the least make it suspect enough to necessitate a full teardown.

Hard to diagnose over the internet. Like others, i have not heard of an oil pump failing in these.

Who pays the DMV? They have a lien that attaches to the vehicle? I'd say stay away from that thing or buy it for super cheap, like junk yard price. $400 MAX, with a clean title. I'd be leery even then. I bought a '96SR with a spun rod bearing for $500. It ran. The SR is a cool Monty and has the 4.60 and locker. I was going to rebuild the engine, then thought better of it as I added up the costs with the DOHC. That DOHC is a complex engine, as I found out post purchase. It is now a parts car. I'm ahead from various parts removed from that car, but my wife does not see the math that way. Also, someone dumb enough to get 3 DUI is dumb enough to rag the crap out of their car. There are other Monty's out there.
