I don't know what you all are talking about...That KC he is such a gentleman! He also could be jealous that Bella has been to Baja more than times than he has.

I'm travelling with my good friend Brian (Wolfsoul on this board). I think you met him on that botched backpack trip last year. He has a passenger from his work and I am riding solo. We will be on the party frequency 146.460.

Yeah, KC is smacktalker for sure.
Okay . . . yes, I did meet Brian and I'll be happy to see him again.
Party frequency, check. I'll be there. We ought to be crossing paths about the 19th or 20th I'd say. I'll be on the lookout for the Chuck Wagon sporting a banana on top.

BTW: Brooke and I are not travelling solo. My folks are coming along in their tricked out '95 Rover.

Mark, my second itinerary will put us on the Pacific side up in the Punta _______ area (swell riding!), if you care to swing by.
Make a George Costanza voice when you read this: Oh I swing, baby, I swing! We ought to be able to do that depending on where ________ is.
I was thinking of hitting San Carlos on the Pacific, too. Think it's worthy as well?

Border Crossing

Opinion: Which is a better border crossing, Algodonez or Mexicali? I've done them both before but on foot.

Any suggestions there? We're looking to get down just beyond San Felipe to camp on the first night. Thoughs or opinions?

Cheers,
Mark

I would use Algodones & miss most of the Mexicali city traffic. Drop down to Mex 2 which intersects with Mex 5 in Mexicali a few miles south of the border, almost like a bypass.

Cool. I see what you mean on the map.

Has this been covered a million times over? Gas stations along the Cortez Coast between San Felipe and Bahia Gonzaga. My dad only has a 200 mile range in his (ironically named) Range Rover. As stated in my first post, we're going to drive the Cortez coast from San Felipe and connect with Mex 1 at Chapala.

Found this quote on the wonderful Internet:

An unreliable supply of fuel is available in a two-hundred mile stretch of highway in mid-peninsula. Rather than count on getting fuel between El Rosário and Guerrero Negro, it's best to add more fuel capacity to your vehicle or carry enough extra gas to tide you through this stretch. Smart travelers always top their tanks in Guerrero Negro and El Rosário.
I might need to call Mario for a few more Scepter cans?

Mark,

I can't help you much with the San Felipe to Laguna Chapala, it's been to many years. I believe you can get fuel at Bahia Gonzaga or Coco's Corner. BX or Allen maybe can fill this in.

You pretty much can always find fuel at Catavina & the LA Bay turnoff (55 gal source). LA Bay now has 2 Pemex's, which is not that far out of the way if you're going to San Borja anyway. I think there may be a new Pemex going in at Nuevo Rosarito, but I don't think it is open yet. The next Pemex is at Jesus Maria, there is also one north of the border with Baja Sur at the monument, a few miles north of Guerrero Negro.

I always carry an extra 5-10 gal when off pavement in Baja.

I've gotten gas in the past at Rancho Chapala & from the Rancho at San Borja.

I just came back from that area sunday, I went down only as far as puertocitos, if your loking for a place to camp, thats an awesome spot, very secluded coves right on the beach, really bitchen spots, there are some hot springs there to check out and some cool whale skeletons. Puertocitos is about 50 miles south of san felipe the road is mostly paved so its a quick drive, there is a pemex there. Gongonza bay is another hour south of puertocitos, all off road, but a nice road, i did it in 2wd. Theres also a pemex there. But in mexico you never know when the gast stations will be out of gas especially in those small towns, so a rule of thumb is alwasy fill up when you see a gas station even if you dont need gas. I would fill up in SF along with 10 extra gallons, eat lunch in SF then drive to puertocitos and camp, and head for gonzaga the next morning.

Thanks for the update there. We're going to be camping somewhere along that inner coast, but if you say Puertecitos is a good place we may shoot for that.

Thanks,
Mark

Last year when I was there in Puertecitos, I saw the Pemex gas station but it was closed.
And here is a link to some pictures of the road to Puertecitos that it may give you some idea on what to expect, the road should be completed by now.

Also if you whant to camp, I would recomend Punta Estrella, only 10.00 dollars and they have very clean restrooms and showers , with a dim light at night in a great beach area.

Thanks, Euro. Nice photos.

I've updated my first post with the broad itinerary again; for posterity I suppose. We leave bright and early in the morning. I've marked off my GPS routes, waypointed missions (when did waypoint become a verb?), selected beaches for camp sites . . . gotta go load the truck.
