Bald Eagle State Forest, 11/18/06

I spent a little more time on Saturday exploring Bald Eagle State Forest here in Pennsylvania. This was my fifth trip up there. I frequent the area because its close to home, and the wilderness is relatively vast as far as PA goes. It mostly consists of gravel forest roads, but there are numerous marked "drivable trails" that offer more remote touring and slightly rougher terrain.

On this day, almost every trail I explored resulted in a dead end - some of which I had anticipated, and others I hadn't. I hate backtracking! Booooring. Still - I found an interesting natural spring, a couple secluded campsites, and several scenic locations off the beaten path. It was my first time out of the house since Monongahela, so it was a fulfilling day trip.

Photo Map (its cool, check it out)

I was apprehensive to drive through this at first, but after some poking and prodding, I found it to be hard bottom. Water level was just below my bumpers. Still, I need to fill that ARB hole soon before my luck runs out. lol

A cool foot bridge leading to a secluded stone cabin. Very nice area. The water was flowing heavily that day because of recent rain.

Passing an interesting stone structure, with an open top and slotted openings on its sides. It appears to be some kind of oven by my best guess, or perhaps just a stone burning pit for trash and whatnot.

Poser shot. Had to be done.

This was a really nice wooded trail that traveled down the mountain via a gap. A picturesque stream ran next to it. There was a potential roadblock up ahead. I dunno - can I squeeze under it?

No dice. What a drag.

It was getting dark, but I decided to explore one last trail. I could really use more lighting on my rig - but after M8000 and after 276C.

Okay, maybe that wasn't such a great idea. I'm two miles in, the trail was barely visible, I'm alone, my check engine light was on, and this picture was a 15 second exposure! At this point, my imagination was starting to play with me. It was totally time to head out.

As a matter of fact, on my way out I passed these two! OMG! I freaked out and floored it - one of them threw a rock at the Cherokee as I blew by.

Looks like you had a nice day, Chris...the shot with the tree and the blue sky is awesome. Yeah, get that winch...there are always lotta trees in PA to throw a strap around...as evidenced by that waterhole you drove through:smiley_drive:

Blog Entry

I now have a blog entry for this outing, but be forewarned - you might find it boring as hell. Its kinda a "travel guide" for those thinking of visiting or exploring the same area. I intend to do a write-up like this every time I go out so they should accumulate and eventually seem less pointless. :)

Also going to eventually include waypoints, but I'm going to do so programmatically to placate the nerd in me.

This is done. Its kinda cool. When I write the trip reports, I upload the GPX file to the web server, specify the file name in my cms control panel, and the web site automatically parses the GPX file and displays all waypoint names, coords, and description in the right column. I'm excited to go on my next adventure just so I can play with it more. :)

Are you sure it wasn't the mothman again, Chris? Oh, right, he's in West Virginia not Pennsylvania.:yikes:

You'll have to guide us on a trip through there sometime, Chris. Any campsites? Looks like a good place to be.

Yes and no. There are official tent campsites that you have to reserve, and there are numerous unofficial campsites - clearings with fire rings that have no doubt been used for camping. I'm going to eventually ask the rangers about these locations - it may be naughty to use them.

Providing we can make use of these unofficial sites, which tend to be more interesting and in better condition than the official ones, I think Bald Eagle State Forest would make a good location for an ExPo meetup. Its a little less wild and not as vast as Monongahela, but its still beautiful and well-suited for a weekend outing.

Next year, I'd like to push further NW and explore Sproul State Forest which seems to be a little bigger.
