Getting rid of these useless and ugly side steps.

New Member History:
Originally from California lurking on this forum for about 5 years now. A Few years ago i job transferred to CO and quickly found that my dumped IS300 on 18's was not going to be suitable for streets that are not maintained, massive pot holes, winter snow and more importantly it wouldn't take me deep into the mountains or to the ski resort. I found a 5spd 5vz 94' 4 runner with a 3" OME lift and 33" BFG MTs. It was in fair condition with some rust and poor paint. I intended to start my first off road adventure build.

Sometime later after being laid off i took a "short detour" to North Dakota to make quick cash and head back to California. 2 years later, Im 3 weeks out from leaving ND to a destination unknown at the moment. I spent most of my time commuting to work in the oil field and doing some carpentry work in between. The harsh ND winters and two unfortunate deer strikes took a toll on the Runner. I loved the Runner but decided recently i would part ways for a different platform that was more suitable for my current needs/wants.

That brings me to last weekend. I found an 06' Tundra in Williston, ND with 113K miles. Clean paint/body. Clean interior. Only light surface rust underneath. It drives straight, the brakes work well, the engine pulls hard and it doesn't seem to need anything at the moment. Its perfect for camping adventures and the moving around that my lady and i will be doing because she is a traveling Medical Technologist. I wasn't able to find anywhere that the timing belt and water pump have been replaced so i will be having it done this week at a Toyota dealer which i hate to pay for because i was a Toyota mechanic at Family Toyota in CA for 3 years. We have a lot to do before the move and the majority of my tools are back in CA in my dads garage for safe keeping.

This thread will mostly be used as a place for me to document our travels and as upgrades come along i will post updates as well. I applaud all the other Tundra owners that have pioneered this platform and charted a path through the short list of aftermarket availability for this truck. Hopefully we continue to see more support as the community grows!

Second 06 in a week! We be taking over with the 1st Gen Tundras!

Welcome! I hear ya about paying for work to be done when you have the tools and knowledge, but its just not economical to do yourself for whatever reason.

Good call on the TB/WP.

When your ready to start dumping some money into the truck for upgrades/replacements, lots of knowledge here about whats proven and works the best.

So, besides removing the steps, whats up first?

Thx. Honestly, Im just gonna enjoy driving this thing for a minute and doing more regular maintenance(fluids, brakes, LBJ's, etc.) Its like driving a brand new truck compared to my clapped out 4 runner.

Little things first. I've got a minor door ding below the driver door handle that I can't stand looking at every time I open the door.

I wanna POR-15 a few things and paint the mirrors and grill. Switch from bench seat to buckets and a console. I will likely get rid of the bed box for retractable bed cover. Rack and RTT.

after that i will be saving... I wanna tub for 35's and do suspension, lockers, and gears all at the same time. Ive definitely got my work cut out for me!

Clean looking AC! I always was a fan of gunmetal Tundras with the OEM split 17" wheels. Awesome start and welcome to another 1st Gen Tundra owner.

North Dakota isn't too fun. Worked down there a little when I was working in the field. Probably a drastic change from the Golden State. Good call on the POR-15 and other PM items. I always try to focus on maintenance and preventative before mods and it has been a successful idealogy, never having incurred a break-down in the field with any of my builds. Although, sometimes it's fun to get side tracked with mods! haha

Thx man! Reading through all the 1st gen build threads was a motivator in helping me choose between a tacoma or tundra. ND is definitely lacking a fun factor but its been a great experience to live in a place so different from home.

Any chance you can dig up another set of HID's for my first mod?
