Battery Shelf Life

I went by my local sears to look and see if they had a DieHard Platinum (Odyssey) Group 31 Battery in stock. They did, but I had this feeling that I doubt they sell a giant "marine" battery very often in Phoenix.
The manufacture date was February of 2008! I think it's actually the battery I saw when they first got them in and started carrying the "new" platinum series.

So, how long of a shelf life do batteries of this type have?

I can't say what the shelf life is, but if I'm paying retail for a new battery, I want one no older than 6 months sitting around in the store. Give me a BIG DISCOUNT if you're peddling a 2 year old battery. Say, at least 50% off.
