Best places to hunt for a used F650GS/G650GS?

The new price isn't all that bad on these things, but something in the 4-6k range would be much more palatable right now.

I'm not used to shopping for bikes, don't see to many on ebay, and hunting threw craigslist just makes me want to walk over to the mountain view bmw dealer and buy a new one.

Any suggestions on finding a decent used one of these?

Thanks
Jason

Those particular bikes hold their value pretty well....just so you know.

Usually there are a few over on Advrider.com, in the flea market section. Of course, finding one in your area might be challenging. When I bought my '07 (in '06), I had been looking for a used one for months...the only used 650GSs I had seen in the Tucson area were ragged out and over priced. So I ended up with a new one instead.

Sounds reasonable enough..

And the 'new' F650GS appears to be a G650GS correct?

I've noticed the decent holding of value. Just the thought of paying CA 9.25% sales tax on those things makes me unhappy :)

The new 650 versus the old 650 is a different beast altogether. The old is a single cylinder while the new one is a twin engine.

As far as the "old" 650's, there are quiet a few of them in the fleamarket on Advrider.

Definitely ADV and F650.com.

They're great bikes BTW ... but expect to be paying $'s to get it kitted out for any sort of expedition work.

Actually, the "new" F650GS is the 798cc parallel twin, the G650GS is the rotax 650cc single.

Models with the G prefix are all singles (G650GS, G650X-country, G650X-challenge, etc), the F prefix are all parallel twins (F800S, F800ST, F800GS), R prefix is the horizontally opposed twin (R1200R, R1200GS, R1200GS-A, etc), and the K prefix is for the inline four cylinders (K1300S, etc).

Correct, although the "old" 650's also had the "F" Prefix. :coffeedrink:

You are correct, up through model year 2007. That is when they realigned the model designations, and seemingly confused half of the world. I'm still not sure why they didn't leave the F prefix on the singles, and give some other prefix to the new parallel twins. I'm sure some German marketing guy that makes a whole lot more money than I do has a reason for it.

I believe, also, that the current engines are being manufactured in China? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I do remember there being a big hullabaloo over it some months back. I would guess that BMW would be strict enough in their oversight of metallurgical processes that quality would still be high..

That reminds me of a saying I've heard my father in-law make. It's something to the effect of how an engineer will design a motor that has 20 bolts holding it together, but only 19 of them are the same size. There is always that one bolt that has a different size head on it. I think it's just that the powers that be, want to keep us all off balance, or something along that line.

I believe they are being assembled in China. I don't know how much of the actual manufacturing is being done there though. Maybe all of it, maybe none of it...probably somewhere in the middle.

Boise's Craigslist has had quite a few lately. They've been flooded with a lot of these types of bikes. Last week there was a huge wave of KLRs for decent prices. The BMWs pop up on and off. We aren't too far from CA.
