I don't want to be political but this is a direct consequence of our economic inequality. People either have plenty of money and just buy new cars or they have so little money that they have to finance a new car on payments because they don't have a couple grand cash to spend on an old car that's going to need ongoing care to stay running. There's fewer and fewer in-between those extremes and it affects every market.
20 years ago when I was buying my first cars $1000 was sort of the yardstick for what could be called a "driveable" car. Anything less than that was rough, though I did own a couple $400 cars and a $700 car. But now $1000 still buys about the same (or better!) driveable car. More of us than ever live in apartments where DIY work is generally forbidden. Fewer of us than ever seem inclined to do any work. If you have a manual trans and it's not a sports car or a wrangler nobody wants it period because nobody under 40 can drive it or wants to learn. If it only has 2 doors and it's not a sports car nobody wants it even though childless couples, active empty nesters and same-sex couples are more prevalent now than ever.
It's not that nobody wants Monteros specifically it's that it's easier for most people to sign an 8 year loan for a new car than buy a set of wrenches at harbor freight and fix a minor problem on an aging car before it turns into a catastrophic problem. There's an abundance of cheap used cars on the market and yours is just another one.
