Here's something new:
Biolite introduces a small, portable camp stove that produces electricity as it heats your meal. The camp stove is 8.25 inches tall and 5 inches in diameter, and weighs 33 oz. Here's a video that illustrates the product, and its big brother stove for home use.
The stove uses "thermoelectric technology" to produce electricity from the excess heat produced by the stove. The juice is used to turn a fan in the base of the stove to improve combustion.
The company claims that it's possible to boil a liter of water using less than 2 oz of wood (twigs, pine cones, wood pellets, etc) in less than 5 minutes.
In addition, the stove has a USB port that can be used to recharge electric devices like a GPS, a phone, or an LED light. Continuous power output is rated at 2W at 5V. The company says that 20 minutes of charging will get you get 60 minutes of talk time on an iPhone. (For comparison, an Apple iPhone charger plugged into mains power will output 5W at 5V.)
Biolite is accepting orders for the Campstove now, price $129. Delivery is supposed to start in July. The larger Homestove is not available for purchase at this point. Read more about the Biolite Campstove here:
