Black Hills Short Trip

Well my dad lives in western Nebraska, and he's wanted to meet up before it started snowing to go four wheeling again. We went to Medicine Bow in Wyoming this summer. So we decided instead of going to Wyoming again, we would meet in the Black Hills since it was a little closer for me.

I set out from Fargo, ND Friday morning. I didn't stop much to take pics on the way down. I stopped in Glen Ullin, ND at KraZkustoms to check out his place, I had met him and his wife at a NDSRA annual meeting a couple years ago and just decided to stop. Ended up buying some parts from him that I would pick up on Sunday, helped pay for a little bit of the trip.

Well I figured I needed at least one pic for the day, so as I got just outside of my destination, Sturgis, SD, I stopped to get a picture:

So I made it in to Sturgis and I met my dad at the hotel who had his pickup and the four wheeler and his Bobcat side by side he just bought. We hopped in my pickup and drove into Deadwood, had supper and played some blackjack. I was $10 up for the night.

The next morning we got up, went and had breakfast and then headed out. The gal at the front desk was very helpful telling us some good places to ride. So we loaded up and head for Gilena Rd, just south of where we were staying.

Nice way to start the morning:

We climbed this steep hill, and when we got to the top I found this old stone marker. We didn't know what it was for but as I was driving back and noticed the newer markers for the 1876 Bismarck-Deadwood trail, I'm wondering if it was an original for that? Maybe someone who knows the area better can shed some light.

We watched these Jeeps pass over this rock ledge, and later when we came back by again there was an old FJ and a 4-runner at the same spot and watched them.

So around 11 we loaded up and went back to the hotel, then hopped in my pickup again, drove to Deadwood for lunch. Ended up eating at The Lodge. Good food but was busy.

Then back to Sturgis, and to be honest, I went and took a nap. I didn't get much sleep so I was really tired. My dad woke me up to get a little riding in before the sun went down.

We were looking for another road, we couldn't find it, but we found a trail with a spot to drop the atv's off, and decided to go down it. I would tell you a name or where it was at if I could, but I didn't see a trail name or marker. It's gravel for a ways then got rough.

Being the old car guy I am and am always old tin hunting, no matter how far from home, can anyone spot the 35-36 Ford 1 1/2 ton truck in this photo:

So when we got a ways up the trail, there was a trail that goes up a steep hill. I lead the way not knowing what was around the bend, the trail was steep and rocky and there was no stopping till the top. We made it up and it was worth it, great way to end the day.

Going down was a butt clencher for me. Both hands on the brakes going down and my camera almost slid off from in between my legs. When I got to the bottom I stopped and got a picture of my dad going down, where the trail ends in the picture, is just where it goes to bend around and gets steeper.

Loaded back up, went to the hotel, loaded the four wheeler in my pickup, and headed to Deadwood again. Supper, more blackjack, and ended the night $50 up. I know I'm such a high roller.

So Sunday morning, got up and had breakfast again and loaded up for the drive back to ND. I had a lay off day Monday so I planned on taking my time getting back and taking some photos along the way. I love old decaying buildings, a lot of the ones I saw along the way though were in pastures that were posted no trespassing so I didn't go in.

Alright the next photo, I was trespassing. Well kinda. I spotted this and had to drive down a prairie trail to get to it, then I got out and hoofed it in about a half mile. Well neighbors called the property owners thinking there was a hunter out there. I'm actually glad he came out to check on me, cause I got some neat history on this awesome barn. Once he saw I was just taking photos, he was ok with me being there. I told him I didn't see any trespassing signs, and we recently had 70-80MPH winds out that way, and they all blew away. He told me he bought the property in 1960, and the part of the barn that was down, used to be the living quarters for the settlers until they got the house built.

After that it was back to Glen Ullin to get my car parts, and ended up BS'ing, finding more parts there I may have to go back for, and ended up making him find a part I plan to sell to him this weekend. So I didn't stop for anymore photos, stopped and saw some gals I know along the way back to Fargo. So an 8 hour trip took me 15.

Well hope you enjoyed.
