Blinking Service Engine lights means what again?

Riddle me this batman!

can't remember what it means...

have not had the time to address the first issue from a week ago on our 2004 Dll - but today the service engine light sparked up like a blinking x-mas tree

we have only driven it a few times since last weeks mystery of possible valves/gaskets and I am planning on taking it to get serviced next week to find out the mystery

but then the SE light started in today....58K miles

had my taxes done yesterday...i wonder what this is going to $$$

oi !

More likely a misfire. Mine has been blinking for over 2 years now.
Does it only do it when you first start and go. Then stop after a mile or so?

The question is it constant blinking or not? If constant, it usually means the cats are being overworked and $$$$ is in your future (hope you have a warranty).

Do you have a code reader? That will be your start. Likely it is related to plugs, wires, coil or HG. So the code will help you come to a conclusion.

it is constant now

the power seems worse than before - the light was not blinking a week ago

makes me want to break something within my reach not sure why :)

what does cats being overworked imply? how much $$$ more than 2K? I was impressed to hear I could have the valves done for 2K which I thought was the most expensive potential issue aside form transfer gears/transmission replacement

I wish it would stop, I don't like it when my wallet runs away without my consent

should I:

1) drive it to the service center - potentially causing more issues
2) set that pig on fire and make some smores
3) put it on ebay under the heading "just like new"
4) call the towing company like a good lad
5) leave a lemon in the seat for the dealer for humor

as i understand it just about anything can make the light come on :coffee:

Just about anything can make the light come on, but not many things make it blink. I don't know what causes it for sure in a D2, but generally, it could mean a misfire. As for the cats... Anytime you are running and misfiring, you're sending unburnt air/fuel through the cat, which then lights off, and will overheat and destroy the cat. I wouldn't recommend driving like this any longer than necessary.

You said constant, but is the light on all of the time, or blinking all of the time? They mean very different things. Blinking means big problems and is not the same as the std. service engine, always on light. The blinking usually comes with a chime as well. I mentioned the blinking as one of the common faults for this is you are running too rich or lean and registering damaging/excessive emissions on the O2 sensors.

So, if it is blinking all of the time, I recommend not driving it and reading the code ASAP.

If the light is always on (not blinking), and you feel rough running, likely you have a fouled plug or damaged wire. And usually that is drivable for a short distance if necessary.

Is it rough at idle only, or smoothes out when the revs are up?

The reality is, we know nothing unless you read the codes. If you can pull the codes, I can tell you what they correspond to.

Just go to Sears and buy a code reading scanner or go to AutoZone and they will read it for you for free.
Without knowing the numbers its throwing we really can't help you much more.

When mine flashes its usually from a misfire and that means too much gas in cats and I've been told that the cats are melting when it flashes.

+1 on buying a code reader.

its nearly suicide in a rover not to drive 24/7 with one. I've bought the top model one at autozone 3 years ago and its saved my *** big time as far as costs and letting me know when its a harmless gas cap loose or a misfire....i won't drive my truck without having it in my toolbox

I bought a ScanGuageII for my Rover, and I love it. It's saved my butt already by actually being able to tell me what exactly my water temps are BEFORE the needle actually got into the red! The MPG readout is accurate and nice to have as well. I recommend that's what you get. You may be able to find it available locally from their website.

I drove it yesterday for the first time in a week

the light is blinking ALL the time no chime, which started 2 days ago

I had the light come on briefly for 5 minutes or so a month ago. The service center said some brackets needed to be replaced and that can trigger the light but this is different

it had a tough time achieving 30-40mph uphill - hit the gas with slow response

at idle it sounds OK

I do believe there is a few autozones near by but not sure I want to risk it

I'm considering the code reader

I think I'm just going to tow it

What's your best guess? Car Talk kind of thing here - lets see who nails it!

Guesses for a Rover misfire? Could be anything. Maybe your power lumbar adjuster has a hole in the bag.

Zoo, got your PM about this. I will respond here.

We need the codes to figure this one out. You likely have a number of issues going on here (misfire, partially clogged cat, etc) but finding the root cause will require some deductive reasoning.

Worth nothing, is that the cats are covered by Federally mandated warranty. If they need to be replaced, see your Land Rover dealer.

OK

picking up autozones code reader tonight, they are lending it to me.....

any do or dont on using this?

what codes am I looking for?

1300s I think are cylinder misfires

Make a list of all the codes that are stored and the order they are stored.

You may have some codes that really dont matter because they are the result of a failed component. a example would be 02 sensor codes when you first have a series of codes that indicate a bad MAF.
