That said, 2 weekends ago I saw an XJ at the Barstow race that had a tank up in the rack.
I'm pretty sure he said it was an aluminum gas tank from a VW Rabbit (or maybe a Scirocco??). He said they are kind of rare but can be found if you look. It was about 12" high, 12" wide, and about 30" long, all aluminum. Has a cap up top and he put it on the driver's side so he could gravity feed it to his tank fill......
You said you are looking for rack mounts.... Good idea as the stock rack mounts would probably fail just from all the forces involved....
